In April 2018, the Russo Brothers debunked the Marvel Cinematic Universe fan theory that the Silver Surfer would be making an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War.
Now, Curt Clendenin, the rumored actor to have landed the humanoid alien role, shared he was on the film's set, but refused to confirm his casting, as reported by ComicBookMovie.com.
When asked by the site if he was cast as the Silver Surfer, Clendenin stated, "Geez. I... I'm not really allowed to say too much about what any of it's... You know, there's a lot. I don't know if you've seen, like the... the Russo brothers are good at... how do I put it? They're good at leaving Easter Eggs too, and they like to have fun with things, you know?"
Although he circled around directly answering the question, the actor added that if he was filmed as the Silver Surfer, then the use of his character might not even have been for the third Avengers film. He stated, "It's like, you know how George Lucas treats his sets? You go into an audition for a movie called Blue Mountain. And it turns out, he's like, 'No, surprise, it's Star Wars.' So, I have to leave some secrecy. I don't know how else to explain it, but time, ideally, will tell." Clendenin stated, "There's a lot of stuff that's not shown, and we've heard of all these new Marvel shows that are coming out, and we've heard about, let's say, certain side projects that directors may or may not have been rumored to work on."
"You never know what kind of interesting nuggets may come to the surface," the actor concluded for fans unsure of what his answer might mean for the character's future in the MCU. "We always hear about how pilots for certain TV shows were shot and stuff, and they never saw the light of day. And then years later, someone ends up uploading something to a YouTube channel."
Avengers: Infinity War isn't the first Marvel film that fans rumored would bring Silver Surfer into the MCU. In February 2020, a rumor circulated that James Gunn's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3 would feature the alien character. The rumor came from a fake Instagram story, appearing to be Gunn's, noting that "discussions" were being had about adding the Silver Surfer to his film. Gunn debunked the theory quickly, telling fans that he "never said" that and hasn't had any "discussions with Marvel" about using the Silver Surfer.
