Avengers: Infinity War is shaping up to be one of the most visually extravagant films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and IMAX is counting on it. The company today released a video comparing the standard theater screen experience to that of an IMAX screen, using the second trailer for Infinity War as a test case.
IMAX’s argument? That the upcoming Marvel film was filmed using IMAX cameras, and therefore will be screened in a 1.9:1 aspect ratio… but only at IMAX screenings. The company claims that the unique aspect ratio will result in 26% more screen real estate for audience members who choose IMAX.
It doesn’t look like the increased aspect ratio will make a critical difference in quieter, dialogue-heavy scenes, but it may end up being a preferred method of viewing for Marvel cinephiles eager to get as much out of the movie’s action scenes as they can.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 27.
