Surprisingly, Marvel Studios' biggest superhero blockbuster to date, Avengers: Infinity War, wasn’t the most Googled film of 2018.
Google released a list of the most trending subjects of 2018, and the top four movies that were entered into the search engine this year were all films based off of Marvel properties. However, Avengers: Infinity War was actually only the fourth most Googled film of 2018, while the top search of the year was Black Panther.
Infinity War was a massive success, becoming the biggest moneymaker of the year and even becoming the fourth-highest grossing film of all time. However, it turns out even with all that success, it wasn’t the most Googled film of the year.
The second and third highest searches were Deadpool 2 and Venom respectively, which is simultaneously surprising (Infinity War was such a cultural touchstone so quickly after it came out) and not all that shocking (both Deadpool 2 and Venom performed very well in their own right).
The fifth most Googled movie turned out to be Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic centering around the career and life of Freddie Mercury from the band Queen.
It’s likely that Marvel will be on this same list next year, with Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home all slated to premiere in 2019.
