Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo just offered a little insight into Ebony Maw, a member of Thanos' Black Order. Describing Ebony Maw as "Thanos' herald," the directing duo revealed the role that the character will play in the film and how actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor brought him to life.

"We really were looking for actors to embody these characters of the Children of Thanos, called the Black Order. This character Ebony Maw, in particular, is like Thanos' herald," Joe Russo explained to JOE.ie. "He's a little bit of his hype man, and Thanos is sort of a culty character. Ebony Maw... is the one who builds up the cult. The character needed a sense of humor and to be a bit wry and he's stealing all of his scenes, so the character seems to be popping."

"Like Josh Brolin with Thanos, Tom [Vaughan-Lawlor] is playing a character that is largely created digitally with graphics and animated, but it is based very specifically on his performance," Anthony Russo added. "It was a great process to work through with Tom, because it's almost like he's a puppeteer in the sense of learning how to control that character and learning how it moves and learning how his facial expressions translate to the character. It was a really involved process that Tom did wonderful with."

In the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, Ebony Maw can be spotted torturing Doctor Strange. Unlike his compatriots, Ebony Maw is known to use his words as his weapon.
