"I'll do you one better... Why is Gamora?!"
This line, as delivered by Drax the Destroyer during a heated moment between the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy, was perhaps one of the funniest bits of Avengers: Infinity War. And, as it turns out, it wasn't even in the script.
In an extensive interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, Infinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus revealed that actor Dave Bautista actually came up with the line during shooting. "The script only said, 'Where is Gamora?' 'I'll do you even better: Who is Gamora?'" Markus said. "And then one day Bautista just goes, 'I'll do you one better: Why is Gamora?'"
The writers may not have come up with the line, but they were quick to recognize the genius of it. "It's like, 'OK, you're very good at your job,'" Markus remarked. It's also a testament to how in tune Bautista is with the live-action version of Drax, the character he helped create alongside Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.
This comes on the heels of the revelation that actor Tom Holland improvised the "I don't want to go" line Peter Parker says to Tony Stark before dying, making it clear that directors Joe and Anthony Russo were quite open to letting the actors come up with their own material during the shoot of the film.
In theaters now, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie.
