Avengers: Infinity War has already made enormous box-office gains on its opening day in China.
After grossing $9.3 million in Thursday night previews, the Marvel Studios sequel raked in another $66 million on its first full day of release in the world's second-largest film market. Variety estimates that Infinity War accounted for 96 percent of cinema revenues in China on Friday.
Infinity War had already set a new record for the largest advance ticket sales than any other film in Chinese history. Going to the weekend, it will attempt to top Avengers: Age of Ultron's $156 million opening weekend record in 2015 -- the highest debut in that country for any Marvel film -- and Monster Hunt 2. Released in Februar, Monster Hunt 2 holds the all-time record for an opening weekend in China with $187 million.
Avengers: Infinity War shows no signs of slowing down as it enters its third weekend of global release, and looks to become the first summer blockbuster to earn $2 billion worldwide.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin.
