Marvel Studios dropped its final Avengers: Infinity War trailer this morning, and in addition too seeing numerous superhero interact for the very first time, the footage also provides us with our first full look at the Black Order.
Thanos' group of elite warriors has been glimpsed in previous trailers and photos, but this is the first time they've appear in one shot, as a true team. The group includes Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw and Black Dwarf, who has been renamed Cull Obsidian for the film. And while Midnight and Maw have been seen before, this is our first look at both Glaive and Obsidian.
Despite having been kept offscreen for the most part, the Black Order is set to play a prominent role in gathering the Infinity Stones for Thanos, with previous trailers showing them fighting some of the Avengers and claiming the Mind Stone from The Vision's head. In Infinity War, they will likely usher in the arrival of Thanos, holding Loki against his will (presumably) when he hands over the Tesseract. Whether they will also be responsible for the Asgardian's demise has yet to be confirmed.
It's still hard to tell how much they will factor into the central conflict of the film. Despite their presence on Earth, they don't seem to be participating in the battle near Wakanda, so we ave to wonder where they will be at that point. However, in the comics they do command the Outriders that make up Thanos' army, which we do see attacking Earth's defenders. This most recent trailer also shows Maw torturing Dr. Strange at some point in the movie, likely related to Strange's possession of the Time Stone in the Eye of Agamotto.
Marvel Studios has never shied away from adapting relatively new comic book concepts to the big screen. The Iron Patriot and Iron Spider armors have both been used in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite having been created within the last 10 years. That being said, the Black Order is possibly the newest comic book creation to make it into the MCU. Created in 2013 by Jonathan Hickman for the Infinity comic event, the Black Order has been a recurring tool in Thanos' bid for power over the last five years, and is currently appearing in the publisher's "Avengers: No Surrender" event.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Tom Hiddleston, and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 27.
