Avengers: Infinity War Was Almost Narrated by Thanos

Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War was perhaps the studio's most ambitious film to date. Not only was it supposed to cap off 10 years of storytelling and over 18-movies' worth of buildup, it also had the daunting task of introducing a convincing and three-dimensional villain that could pose a veritable threat not just to the Avengers themselves, but to the universe as well.

And, as we all know, Infinity War managed to deliver that in spades. The film's take on Thanos borrowed all the right elements from the comic books while giving him a different backstory that made him even more of a compelling character. And yet, as it turns out, the movie could have featured a lot more insight into the Mad Titan.

Following a special screening of Infinity War on Wednesday night, brothers Joe and Anthony Russo took part in a live Q&A session with the audience, where they were asked all manner of questions about the film and its production. It was there that Joe Russo revealed that one version of Infinity War's script had Thanos narrate the film.

"We did three drafts of this that were all radically different," the director revealed. "One draft involved Thanos as the narrator of the film. It was non-linear in structure, it had backstories for the Black Order, and they were all introduced in very cool sequences. But it ended up being a 250-page script and we thought, ‘Alright, we can’t fit all of this storytelling.’"

While they ended up changing the framing of the film, the narration did manage to inform their take on the character, and help them understand the character better.

"I think writing out Thanos’ narration gave us insight into who he was as a character and what we wanted him to do in this film. So then it was much easier once we started pulling all that out to make it subtext for him as a character, and to make a more linear structure."

With one more film to go, Avengers 4 will more than likely reveal even more about the Mad Titan when Earth's Mightiest Heroes fight to restore all the lives that Thanos wiped out.
