The following contains spoilers for Avengers Forever #13, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

The Avengers of the Marvel multiverse have found themselves increasingly contending with the greatest dangers that foes like Mephisto and the Masters of Evil can throw at them. With the God Quarry potentially up for grabs, the heroes are fighting for the continued survival of the multiverse as it currently exists, and can't hold back in any way. Luckily, one of their major allies just arrived on the scene, and they found the ultimate way to weaponize an iconic Marvel weapon.

The Goddess of Thunder may not wield Mjolnir themselves, but they found a way to weaponize a multiverse's worth of them all at once in Avengers Forever #13 (by Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, Mark Farmer, Frank Martin, and VC's Cory Petit). By unleashing against the Mephisto horde, the trio manages to turn the tide of the battle towards the heroes even if just briefly. And they may have found the ideal way to empower some of the multiversal Avengers ahead of the battle's next stage.

The Avengers Army has been vital to the fight against Mephisto and his Council of Red, and have received some much-needed backup in the form of the Goddesses of Thunder and Old Man Phoenix. The trio throws themselves into the conflict with little restraint, with Alti and Frigg quickly lending their combat skills to the ranks of heroes beside them. But Ellisiv reveals their ship has also collected a powerful secret weapon during their multiversal journeys. It turns out the Goddesses of Thunder had also come across the countless variations of Thor's hammer Mjolnir that had been crafted in doomed worlds and left in the dust following their timeline's end.

The hammers have become a propulsion system through the wild boundaries between realities, tied to the women's ship to keep them all together. But upon reaching the battlefield, Ellisiv uses a mace to cut loose the ropes that had been holding them up. As a result, the hammers all fall to the battlefield -- crashing with a tremendous weight that only the Worthy could hope to lift. As a result, the crashing hammers effectively become a powerful bomb unleashed directly over the Mephisto army. The blow quickly scatters the demonic horde, and gives the Avengers Army an opening they're able to press. This leads to Mephisto's army deciding to retreat while the heroes finally have the chance to regroup. It's a big move from the Goddess of Thunder, and a very fun use of Mjolnir as a weapon.

Why The Mjolnir Assault Is Such A Good Idea

Avengers Forever Hammer Bomb 1

Mjolnir is one of Marvel's most iconic weapons, serving heroes well over the years. While it has many amazing abilities and aspects, Mjolnir also comes with the caveat that only the worthy may wield the hammer -- and it remains immobile in the hands of anyone else. The Avengers have already used that supernatural weight to their advantage, with Thor and the young incarnation of his father using both of their hammers together to pin a Venom-enhanced Thanos long enough to strip the villain of the upgrade. But by collecting an entire multiverse's worth of them and unleashing them all at once, the heroes have discovered a means of using the hammer even when they technically count weld it.

The hammers might also be a useful means of empowering the Avengers Army during their brief respite from danger, as some of the Captain America variants have already been shown to being worthy to life some of the hammers. The biggest problem is that the weapon can only really be used once in a battle, with any hope of rearming the assault requiring the time and people to find and collect all the hammers. It's a big development for the heroes and might be the kind of edge they need to counter the apparent plans of Doom Supreme, who uses the brief pause in battle to begin his assault against the God Quarry. While it's a shame they won't be able to simply turn around and use the same tactic again, the Mjolnir Assault might still give the heroes enough of an advantage to really hold their own against Doom and his army of broken variants.
