Things don't look good for Tony Stark. The unquestionable face of the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened the first trailer for Avengers: Endgame adrift in space in the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship following the events of Infinity War.
Tony uses his damaged Iron Man helmet to record a message for Pepper Potts on Earth, but he has no way to know whether she will ever receive it. Plus, even if she does, it's not as if she has a spaceship readily available to rescue him. Marvel Studios isn't likely to allow Iron Man to die in such an anticlimactic manner, so someone will have to make a surprise appearance to save the day. And there's no better candidate than the so-far-absent superhero, Captain Marvel.
Let's try to connect some dots to see how Captain Marvel can be the key to Tony Stark's survival. The post-credits scene of Infinity War depicted Nick Fury sending a distress call to Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, right before he turned to dust. Captain Marvel takes place in the '90s, and follow Carol as she meets Fury, just as Earth is caught between the warring alien Kree and Skrulls. We're not sure what happens between the events of Captain Marvel and the original Iron Man, something obviously keeps Carol out of play for decades, until she finally teams up with Earth's Mightiest Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Endgame to stop Thanos.
Captain Marvel is Fury's fail-safe in the event Earth is threatened by a cosmic threat, and Thanos definitely falls into that category. If Captain Marvel is indeed heading back to Earth in response to Fury's signal, she could hypothetically cross paths with Tony. If that scenario were to play out, Endgame could feature Tony and Carol sharing a good amount of screen time, allowing Robert Downey Jr. to pass the torch to Larson if he bows out of the MCU with Endgame.
Another hero who shouldn't be overlooked is Valkyrie. Although she was absent from Infinity War, Tessa Thompson let fans know she survived Thanos' snap. That means she's with the other Asgardian refugees who escaped the Mad Titan's assault in the opening moments of the film.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed Captain Marvel to be the strongest character in the MCU, which likely means she'll be given the biggest spotlight possible. Endgame may shape up to make that happen once our heroes face off for Round 2 against Thanos. Just picture it: The off-the-charts power of Captain Marvel combined with Iron Man's witty banter and high intelligence would make a pretty dynamic team. While moviegoers would rejoice, fans of the comics would be best served if they forgot how Tony and Carol clashed in the 2016 comic crossover Civil War II.
