The new Avengers: Endgame trailer didn't feature a lot new footage from the highly anticipated film, but it did offer enough to give us an idea of the story's direction: the surviving superheroes are still dealing with the fallout of Thanos' reality-altering, Infinity-powered snap, and they are gearing up to take the fight directly to the Mad Titan.

The new footage has been the subject of many theories from fans, who are trying to piece together the clues at their disposal. However, the trailer may not feature exact footage that will be featured in the final film. After all, Avengers: Infinity War used false or altered footage prior to the film's release.

Last May, directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed they used "all the material that we have at our disposal to create a trailer" for Infinity War. "We look at the trailer as a very different experience than the movie, and I think audiences are so predictive now that you have to be very smart about how you craft a trailer because an audience can watch a trailer and basically tell you what’s gonna happen in the film," Joe Russo explained.

"We consume too much content," he added at the time. "So at our disposal are lots of different shots that aren’t in the movie that we can manipulate through CG to tell a story that we want to tell specifically for the purpose of the trailer and not for the film."

Speaking in this month's issue of Empire, Russo went on to explain that this is all done in order to ensure that the audience experiences genuine surprises when watching the film in the theater. "The thing that's most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative," he said. "When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11 a.m. on the day it opened, and sat there until 10 p.m. watching it back to back to back, it so profoundly moved me because I didn't know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We're trying to replicate that experience." This further suggests they will go to extra lengths to intentionally hold Endgame details back from fans.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau and Bradley Cooper, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 26.
