Avengers: Endgame Director Cautions 99% of Toy Leaks Are Inaccurate

Ever since merchandising from Avengers: Endgame began to leak to the general public late last year, fans have speculated that the designs offer clues for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.

In an interview with Collider to discuss the visual effects used in Avengers: Infinity War, the topic inevitably turned to Endgame, with co-director Joe Russo addressing the need for secrecy about the film's plot. Even so, tie-in merchandising runs the risk of giving away key plot points and character changes, but Russo isn't worried about that.

"What’s interesting about toy leaks is that 99 percent of the time they’re not accurate. Because toys are, frankly, tailored to either old concepts or completely different concepts than what’s in the movie," Russo explained. "I laugh a lot when those toy leaks show up because I’m like, well, that’s great, because that’s a misdirect, because it has nothing to do with the film.”

One such toy leak had appeared last month, revealing new costumes for many of the superheroes returning for the film. Whether or not these designs will actually appear in Endgame has yet to be seen.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie. The film arrives on April 26.
