The Super Bowl kicked off in earnest with a TV spot for Marvel's Avengers: Endgame that's, no doubt, far too brief for most fans, clocking in at a mere 30 seconds. However, there's a lot to glean from the new footage.
The promo opens with a fast-moving montage of the heroes who fell victim to Thanos' devastating snap at the end Avengers; Infinity War, referred to in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as "The Decimation." If one pauses, it's possible to see Doctor Strange, the Wasp, Vision, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther, Falcon, Scarlet Witch, Bucky Barnes and Spider-Man. It's sad, but a good way to remind audiences about what's at stake in Endgame.
After the unsettling dusting of the Marvel Studios logo, there are two glimpses of the aftermath of Infinity War. We see New York City empty in the early evening: There are dozens of ships surrounding Liberty Island, and Citi Field is empty, save for the cars in the parking lot. But there appear to be encampments at both locations, as if survivors have gravitated there.
"Some people move on," Steve Rogers says in voiceover. "But not us." The next scene shows him in what appears to be a support group for those who lost loved ones in the Decimation; note the poster asking, "Where do we go, now that they're gone?" Steve has needed therapy for a while now, and he's finally getting it.
Next is a series of quick cuts of the other Avengers, beginning with Tony Stark and Nebula tinkering together. Judging from the background, this is likely ship the Guardians of the Galaxy brought to Titan.
Immediately afterward is a shot of Steve, Natasha Romanoff, Bruce Banner and James Rhodes leaving Avengers Compound to greet someone. Tony? Captain Marvel? That will have to wait, however, as we then see Rocket Raccoon walking into a seaside shack, and Natasha doing some target practice. We also see Thor, as well as Scott and Rhodey suiting up, and Hawkeye (well, Ronin now) bathed in red.
The most intriguing shots come at the end, as Steve struggles to put on his old shield; his hand actually shakes before he fastens the strap. It's clear that something has taken a physical toll on Captain America.
For the final shot before the release date, we see the Avengers and Rocket walking single file, their silhouettes bathed in sunlight. "Not us," Steve repeats, signifying the Avengers are about to enact a plan to defeat Thanos and, presumably, undo the effects of the Decimation. We don't see what they're wearing, lending credence to the theory that the surviving heroes will don specialized white Avengers suits at some point.
