This month, Avengers: Endgame will wrap up a story that's been building for a decade, the "Infinity Saga" of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As that story comes to an end, it may also represent the end of another era: The Stan Lee cameo. At a press tour in India, co-director Joe Russo revealed that Endgame may be the last time the late Lee appears onscreen for one of his famous cameos.

"I wouldn't be standing here without him," Russo said. "I believe that his final cameo is in Endgame. I don't believe if he was well enough to do the Homecoming cameo or not, but it was incredible. I grew up on these comic books. Stan Lee was an idol of mine when I was a kid and to have the opportunity to not only work on the material that he created but to work with him is childhood dream come true."

Of course, Russo's Homecoming comment was obviously a reference to Spider-Man: Far From Home, the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel set to hit theaters in July. Previously, it was rumored that the much-awaited Spider-Man sequel could feature the last appearance of the Web-Slinger's famed co-creator, but now it appears it's the Avengers that get the honor.

Lee's cameos have been a staple of Marvel properties, starting with his appearance in the TV-film The Trial of the Incredible Hulk in 1989. Despite the rights of different Marvel properties belonging to different studios, the cameos have been one of the few connecting threads between the films. Whether it be Disney's Big Hero 6, Sony's Spider-Man series or Fox's X-Men movies, the comic book legend's presence had been in each film in some capacity. Since Lee's passing last November, Marvel has paid tribute to him both onscreen and within the pages of its comic books. Endgame will be Stan Lee's 22nd MCU cameo.
