For almost a decade, Avatar has held the record for the all-time global box office with $2.79 billion. Despite becoming the fastest movie to reach the 2 billion mark, Avengers: Endgame might not be able to dethrone the James Cameron film.

As of yesterday, Endgame is just $37M shy of taking the title, a sum that isn't impossible to overcome, but certainly not guaranteed either. The newly re-released version of Endgame contains a Stan Lee tribute, a Hulk deleted scene, and a short post credit clip from Spider-Man: Far From Home. This re-release will hit screens in the US, Canada, and 38 offshore markets.

The Na'vi might be a greater threat to the Avengers than Thanos. According to Deadline, it is currently "not expected" that Endgame will topple Avatar with its re-release, and if it does, this turn of events "would shock many in distribution circles."

The outlet explains that even if the fourth Avengers film grosses $10 million-$15 million worldwide in the following week, the remaining $22 million-$27 million will be "an uphill slog that might require an additional theatrical re-release." Still, it's not over until it's over, and there are many ways Earth's Mightiest Heroes could still come out on top in the battle for box office supremacy. For instance, Spider-Man: Far From Home might help push some extra weight.
