Hot off the recent report that Disney did not submit Robert Downey Jr. for Oscar consideration, one dedicated fan has taken it upon themselves try and get the actor nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.
Diana Whatley, creator of the Change.org petition, addresses the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. "We, the undersigned, were so moved by Mr. Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame that we believe he is unquestionably deserving of the Academy’s Award for Best Actor". At the time of writing, the petition is currently sitting just shy of its second goal of 5,000 signatures. From the look of it, the film's directors aren't the only ones who want to see Downey's performance receive recognition.
Downey was last nominated for Best Actor in 1993 for his performance in Richard Attenborough's Chaplin. If the Academy does indeed choose to nominate "the father of the MCU", it would be the actor's second-ever Best Actor nomination.
Avengers: Endgame saw Tony Stark make the ultimate sacrifice to bring back everyone that vanished following Thanos' success in eliminating half of all life. Although it seems pretty clear that Endgame was RDJ's last time playing the character, recent reports have led fans to believe otherwise.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
