Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo discussed the possibility of directing an X-Men film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In an interview with AP Entertainment, the Russo brothers were asked whether they were interested in directing a new adventure for the X-Men. "One of my prized possessions is Incredible Hulk #181, which is the first appearance of Wolverine," Joe Russo explained. "It's an important part of my comic book collection. Wolverine being so essential to the X-Men, of course, that would be a fun project to work on and find a new way into it. But, I do think that that's probably something that [Marvel Studios President and Marvel Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige] has rightfully put aside for a while to introduce some new characters to the world, and bring that back when it's ready."

It is currently unclear if or when the X-Men will enter the MCU, though Sir Patrick Stewart recently reprised his X-Men role as Charles Xavier/Professor X for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a role he has played in nine previous X-Men films. Moreover, Rocketman's Taron Egerton recently met with Feige to discuss joining the MCU in a mystery role, and there is some speculation that it could be for Wolverine.

A New Wolverine?

"I don’t think it would be wrong to say that," Egerton said. "I'd be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh [Jackman] is so associated with the role that I'd wonder if it'd be very difficult for someone else to do it. But hopefully, if it does come around, they'll give me a shot." This was not the first time Egerton has expressed playing the iconic X-Men, saying in February that playing Wolverine would be "like playing Bond... it would be exciting to play a role where you play to by such a huge audience. Those movies are the most-watched movies in the world."

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the X-Men debuted in Marvel Comics' The X-Men #1. The franchise follows a group of beings called mutants, who are born with the "X" gene, which gives them superpowers. 20th Century Fox produced an entire X-Men film franchise between 2000 and 2020 which consisted of 13 movies before the rights were regained by Marvel Studios in 2019.

While the Russo brothers likely won't helm an X-Men movie any time soon, their upcoming projects include The Gray Man starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, a sci-fi series called Citadel starring Priyanka Chopra, Richard Madden, and Stanley Tucci, and The Electric State, a film starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt, about a teenager who scours the American West, in the company of a robot and a drifter, in search of her brother.

The Gray Man is set for a limited theatrical release on July 15, before premiering on Netflix on July 22.
