WARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame, in theaters now.
In the beginning of Avengers: Endgame, Earth's Mightiest Heroes found out Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones he used to snap half the galaxy away in Infinity War. However, Joe and Anthony Russo have now revealed that while, their physical housing is gone, the essence of the Stones still lives on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Speaking in a Q&A at Washington's Smithsonian Air & Space Museum posted to Reddit, when asked about the Mad Titan using the Infinity Gauntlet to eviscerate the Stones, they replied, "Thanos only reduced the stones to the atomic level. The stones are still present in the universe."
This means the Infinity Stones could still very much appear in the MCU, and more so, it could offer Marvel Studios a shot at adapting a major change the publisher made to the gems this year in Infinity Wars. There, they were revealed to be sentient, with their very spirits leaving to seek out hosts in the galaxy.
Nonetheless, even if the particular set of Stones Thanos obliterated don't come back into play, given that Endgame dealt with time-travel, and Loki also escaped the past with a Tesseract, chances are we still haven't seen the last of these cosmic relics.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
