All eyes on are Avengers: Endgame as the release draws closer, and if ticket sales in China are any indication, the film is going to shatter records.
Gavin Feng tracks the Chinese box office and its relation to the United States box office sales. Through a series of tweets, Feng reported Avengers: Endgame has broken multiple Chinese box office records, and it isn’t slowing down yet.
New record - Although there is still 10 days to meet with Chinese audience, but Avengers: Endgame just broke the midnights box office record set by The Fate of the Furious(¥62.8M vs ¥62.1M). In the next 240 hours, it will keep selling more tickets. #AvengersEndgame pic.twitter.com/9Xj4pw86KV— Gavin Feng (@gavinfeng97) April 13, 2019
Within six hours of tickets going on sale, Avengers: Endgame sold more than one million tickets on pre-sale, a first for a film in China, and in doing so shattered what Avenger: Infinity War made in its first five days of sales. As of this writing and with 10 days remaining to continue pre-sales, Gavin reports Avengers: Endgame has already broken the midnight box office record in China. That record was previously held by 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, which currently holds the record for the second-highest grossing worldwide opening of all time, fittingly right behind Avengers: Infinity War.
The long-term numbers are incredible, too. When compared to the best-selling import films of all time in China, Avengers: Endgame is already ranked sixth, and is only behind Avengers: Infinity War, Fate of the Furious, Furious 7, Warcraft and Transformers: The Last Knight. Going off pre-sales alone, Endgame is poised to handily take the top slot in all-time sales and may do so by a wide margin.
Comparing Endgame and Infinity War tells the story of an audience hungry for the next part of the Avengers saga following the snap. Endgame has already sold more tickets than Infinity War did in its first two weeks of sales, and in terms of midnight release tickets has almost matched those sales. While the numbers are interesting, they’re not necessarily surprising either. Fandango reported earlier that Endgame outsold Infinity War 5:1 in the US. The film made headlines for long online waits and website crashes when pre-sale tickets became available in the states, and now holds Fandango’s records for Best Week and First Day of pre-sales. The pre-sale record, previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was shattered in just six hours.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been breaking records in China for months now, with Captain Marvel’s advanced ticket sales only behind Avengers: Infinity War when compared to other MCU films, and smashing records previously set by Venom, which was a surprise hit in China. Captain Marvel has gone on to become a worldwide powerhouse, recently crossing the $1 billion threshold.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau and Bradley Cooper, with Gwyneth Paltrow and Josh Brolin. The film arrives April 26.
