Avengers: Endgame Is Already Breaking Box Office Records in China

Avengers: Endgame is already shattering records, this time by surpassing the record for the biggest opening day in Chinese history.

According to Variety, Endgame surpassed $100 million on its opening day in China. If the film continues on this streak, it will become the biggest Hollywood title ever in the Middle Kingdom. It also surpassed China's record for pre-sales, exceeding $15 million, and accounted for  99 percent of Wednesday's movie ticket sales.

Estimates suggest the film could make upwards of $300 million in China before opening weekend ends. What's more, the popularity of Endgame has given some Chinese theaters (reportedly more than 1,050 theaters for 220,000 tickets) incentive to pocket "excessive service fees."

The previous record for biggest opening day in China was held by Monster Hunt 2, a domestic film released in 2018, while the highest performing foreign film was 2017's The Fate of the Furious.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film opens Friday worldwide.
