The writers of Avengers: Endgame have strong views on whether Chris Evans should return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America.

As the OG Avengers took on Josh Brolin's Thanos following Avengers: Infinity War's "Decimation," there were some major departures from the superhero roster. Alongside the deaths of Iron Man and Black Widow, Steve Rogers decided to live out his happy ending in the past and returned for a fleeting appearance as Old Man Cap before the credits rolled.

While there are a number of ways Rogers could return to the MCU, Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely told Screen Rant it would "hurt" the world's highest-grossing franchise.

Discussing why Evans shouldn't come back after eight years as the First Avenger, Markus told the site, "I also don’t want to. I love writing for Cap, I love Evans. But I really feel, much like Tony, we got them to a place where they don't need to do it anymore. I'd hate to gin up something hokey to get them back."

Explaining the emotional impact of Rogers handing over the mantle to Sam Wilson and aging gracefully in the past, McFeely added, "I do worry that if they do stuff like that, it'll ding Endgame in the rearview mirror. This is such an important and such an interesting moment in movies, because a very successful studio just put their tools down."

Marvel Comics has survived the death of Captain America before and is also no stranger to Old Man Rogers. However, given the climactic final act of Endgame and the writers putting the pieces in place for a whole new generation of Avengers, the character has a definitive ending. Added to this, Evans has posted plenty of emotional goodbyes to his tenure as Captain America in the run-up to (and aftermath of) Endgame.

Some fans are already divided by the return of Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. for Black Widow, so bringing back a retired Avenger might only add to the issue. As it stands, it looks like Evans and the Endgame writers really are done with the Steve Rogers era of Captain America. What the future holds remains to be seen, but for now, Anthony Mackie will look to carry on the shield in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is now available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
