Avengers: Endgame has just taken another major step towards dethroning James Cameron's Avatar as the highest-grossing film worldwide of all time.

Endgame's worldwide box office total hit at $2,749,603,966 over the weekend. This surpasses Avatar's original theatrical run, which earned $2,749,064,328 before its subsequent release, which further boosted its box office earnings. Redditor comrade_batman pointed out that Endgame is now only $38.3 million away from surpassing Avatar's lifetime theatrical box office total.

Endgame is poised to receive its own special re-release this coming weekend, with seven minutes of additional footage and a tribute to late comic book creator Stan Lee, who has a posthumous cameo in the film.

Endgame stands the very real possibility of becoming the highest-earning film of all time by the end of the month, buoyed by Marvel Studios' re-release.
