UPDATE 8/19/2019 at 5:27 PM ET: In a followup to ComicBook.com, Joe Russo clarified that he was joking about Richard Rider's Avengers: Endgame cameo: "That was actually a joke on our part." The original story remains unaltered below.
Richard Rider's Nova may or may not have made a cameo appearance in Avengers: Endgame. During a Q&A, directors Joe and Anthony Russo suggested he appeared during the climactic final battle between Thanos and the Avengers.
"I'd look closely at that scene again and you will see..." Joe Russo began.
"There are thousands of people," Anthony Russo cut in.
"You will see Richard Rider in the background in the shot," Joe Russo said, looking into the camera out of the corner of his eye. "Easter egg."
Of course, it's worth noting that the Russos' response here may be tongue-in-cheek. Not all of their answers in this interview were completely serious, which means this particular revelation could be a dry joke or sarcasm.
However, the film had plenty of unexpected cameos during this same scene. For instance, Howard the Duck -- another cosmic character -- can be spotted running into battle alongside the Avengers. So, while the Russos may or may not have been joking about Richard Rider, the character's appearance in Endgame is certainly within the realm of possibility.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Danai Gurira as Okoye and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with Gwyneth Paltrow Pepper Potts, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Josh Brolin as Thanos. The film is available on Digital HD, Blu-ray and 4K UHD.
