The following contains spoilers for Avengers #64, now on sale from Marvel Comics.

Doctor Doom has always been one of Marvel's marquee villains, working well against pretty much each and every hero in the universe. His schemes can be as petty or grandiose as any story demands, and that allows someone full of pure spite to take on cosmic power boosts to fulfill his ego. This even seems to carry over to his most dangerous variant ever, who just revealed an ulterior motive in his overarching plans.

Avengers #64 (by Jason Aaron, Javier Garron, David Curiel, and VC's Cory Petit) reveals that the Doom Supreme at the head of the multiversal Masters of Evil has been playing a long game all along. After leaving his allies to be defeated by the Avengers, it looks like he's trying to claim the power of gods -- similar to his ultimate scheme from Secret Wars.

Avengers Doom Supreme Plan 3

Since they were introduced, the Multiversal Masters of Evil have been making their way across various dimensions, leaving chaos and bloodshed in their wake. One of the most devastating is the Doom Supreme, a variant of Doctor Doom who achieved total dominance in his world. While traveling across the multiverse, he's been serving as the leader of the Masters of Evil, while also quietly building his own army of Victor Von Doom variants. Despite this massive and powerful force at his command, Doom has seemed unconvinced to call upon them - even when facing off with the might of the All-Rider.

But as the battles in Avengers and Avengers Forever continue to grow, it seems like Doom's endgame is finally in reach. While the Masters of Evil spend Avengers #64 combating -- and losing to -- the Earth-616 Avengers, the Council of Red is carrying out an assault on the God Quarry. Full of primordial power that could reshape the very multiverse, the Avengers Army has been able to so far hold that force at bay and keep Mephisto from claiming it. But it seems Doom Supreme - and his entire army, atop a fusion of Doctor Doom and Ego the Living Planet -- are heading straight for it as well. Having used the Masters of Evil as a distraction against the most consistently successful Avengers in the multiverse, Doom seems to be aiming for the same thing Mephisto is after - pure, unstoppable power in the form of long-lost cosmic forces.

Avengers Doom Supreme Plan 2

The Avengers already had their hands full without Doom Supreme's intervention, and it seems his assault on the God Quarry could be a game-changer going into the final stretch of the conflict. If Doom is indeed trying to claim the power of the God Quarry, then he's likely seeking to achieve cosmic godhood yet again. This is far from the first time Doom has attempted such a move - and the core-Marvel Universe version of Victor Von Doom has even succeeded in that goal in the past, albeit only briefly. During the events of both the original Secret Wars and the 2015 storyline of the same name, Doom was able to achieve god-like power. In the latter, he even reshaped the remnants of the multiverse into Battle-World, under his control and command.

Doom Supreme seems to be following a similar trajectory but has a force at his command that could help seal the deal and ensure his continued dominance over the entire multiverse. But on some level, it is ironic that even at his most vicious and powerful, Doctor Doom always falls back onto the same kind of plan, every time. Doom's hubris might even yet prove his undoing yet again, as it's likely Mephisto and even Avenger Prime have some plans hidden up their sleeves to counter a fairly obvious step taken by Doom. Instead, the real question is whether even the Council of Red or the Avengers Army is actually capable of holding back an entire multiverse worth of Doctor Dooms, with the fate of the multiverse at stakes.
