Marvel Comics has already hyped its incoming Avengers storyline "No Surrender" as "The Beginning of the End," and for one hero, the end will arrive well before the event is finished. Revealed today via the publisher's solicitations for comics shipping in January, when the fourth chapter of the sixteen-part weekly event will see one of Earth's Mightest Heroes die.
"The Avengers are caught in a game of cosmic proportions," the issue's description reads, "but they don’t know the rules – and one of them is about to pay the ultimate price! THE FIRST AVENGER FALLS!"
Though Captain America is often referred to as "the first Avenger," its unlikely he'll be the one to "pay the ultimate price" in the event. After all, Steve Rogers just went through the wringer in the recently concluded Secret Empire event, and while we don't expect Marvel to take it easy on him, it's difficult to imagine the character being killed off so soon after his return.
The three-month storyline, written by Mark Waid (Avengers), Al Ewing (U.S.Avengers) and Jim Zub (Uncanny Avengers), and illustrated by Pepe Larraz, Paco Medina and Kim Jacinto, will run weekly beginning with Avengers #675; Marvel's Uncanny Avengers and USAvengers will go on hiatus for the duration, though the publisher has not yet revealed whether they'll return when "No Surrender" concludes.
