Longtime Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Chris Evans has repeatedly indicated that next year's untitled sequel to Avengers: Infinity War will be his final appearance as Captain America, but director Joe Russo believes Evans' claims may not be as definitive as previously believed.

When Evans announced the completion of the filming for his final scenes for the fourth Avengers film last month on Twitter, he hinted that it may be his last portrayal as the classic Marvel superhero. Despite this, Russo teased that Evans will still be around in the MCU in some capacity.

"I think it was more emotional for him than us because he's not done yet," Russo said of Evans' tweet in an interview with USA Today. "And I won't explain what that means, but audiences will soon understand what I'm talking about."

Russo -- who co-directed Evans as Captain America with his brother Anthony in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2016's Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War and its sequel -- has worked with the actor more than any other director. While fans had previously assumed Steve Rogers would meet his untimely end by Avengers 4's climax, Russo's comments indicate that something different may be in store for the Star-Spangled Avenger.
