In the same announcement, it was also revealed that the newest attraction on the Avengers Campus will feature King Thanos, the deadliest variant of the Marvel supervillain, as the main antagonist for this new story. Marvel's Werewolf By Night special for Disney+ is set to follow the exploits of Jack Russell, portrayed by Gael García Bernal, a man suffering from a lycanthropic curse that leads him to take on the role of the titular beast. Created by writers Roy Thomas and Jeanie Thomas, Gerry Conway and illustrator Mike Ploog, Jack Russell first appeared in 1972's Marvel Spotlight #2 in the story "Night of Full Moon -- Night of Fear!" The first trailer for Werewolf By Night also unveiled at D23 and embraced the camp of classic horror films, as well as their iconic black-and-white aesthetic.

The trailer also offered a first look at the MCU's Man-Thing, who had previously been rumored to make an appearance in the special. Introduced in 1971's Savage Tales #1 in the story "...Man-Thing!" by Roy Thomas, Conway and artist Gray Morrow, the scientist formerly known as Dr. Ted Sallis was transformed following a fiery car crash. In the crash, he was doused with an experimental Super-Soldier Serum that infused his body with the latent energies of the surrounding swamp. As Man-Thing, Sallis is effectively indestructible and carries a touch that burns all who feel fear. He is also innately connected to the Nexus of All Realities.

Werewolf by Night director Michael Giacchino previously opened up about working on the upcoming Halloween special. "I've been having a blast. It's an incredibly challenging process," Giacchino stated. "I love it. Every day I've been having fun working on it, and we're in the middle of it, and hopefully, very soon we'll share a lot more about it. There's not much I can say other than 'I'm having a good time.' And I am working on something that I love, so I mean, that is... That's a win-win right there."

Werewolf By Night releases on Disney+ on Oct. 7.
