WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Avengers #45, by Jason Aaron, Luca Maresca, David Curiel and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

One of the more surprising recent additions to the Avengers is the dhampir Blade. In the immediate aftermath of the crossover event King in Black, Blade finally reaches his last straw with Earth's Mightiest Heroes as his priorities change and he is approached with a job offer he could never refuse: To serve as an enforcer over a newly founded vampire nation-state and ensure that none of the resident bloodsuckers menace their human neighbors.

As the situation grew increasingly dire during King in Black, the Avengers made a desperate alliance with Dracula and his vampire hordes to help stem the symbiote tide. The vampire army provided valuable assistance to the heroes, but as soon as Knull was defeated, Blade predictably turned on them. The vampires on the scene were cut down, with the rest retreating back to Dracula's new stronghold in the ruins of Chernobyl.

Dracula insisted that this treatment was thoroughly despicable and demanded that his vampire nation-state not only be recognized by the United Nations as its own sovereign nation, but that Blade should be remanded in Chernobyl to face justice for his alleged war crimes. Learning that Black Panther is capitulating to the majority of Dracula's demands, including the release of captive vampires under the argument that they are actually detained political prisoners, Blade quits the Avengers in a huff. T'Challa offers him the ultimate dream job that will make Dracula's requests a major political headache for the Lord of Vampires.

In exchange for sovereignty, Blade has been placed as the intergovernmental agency's official inspector to observe Dracula and his kingdom at all times. As part of his new job duties, Blade closely monitors vampire activity throughout the fledgling country to ensure they don't step out of line and poise an active threat towards their human counterparts. With Blade holding an official UN position and his assessment of the vampire nation's compliance, Dracula is forced to endure the Daywalker's constant scrutiny if he hopes to retain his newly gained international sovereignty. And as the daily source of Dracula's greatest annoyance, Blade clearly relishes his new, UN-authorized role as he departs Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Blade joined the current Avengers lineup to help the heroes step in to quell a vampire civil war in Russia before it consumed the planet. Since then, Blade has been an important part of the team while Dracula turned his attention towards Wolverine. Following King in Black, the Avengers' deal with the vampires has cost them one of their own, but Blade takes on a different role to pay the price for the deal the heroes cut with the undead. Fortunately for Eric Brooks, the vampire hunter gets to annoy Dracula and his kingdom, if only as a bureaucratic nightmare. The Daywalker now serves compliance papers instead of stakes and all the Lord of Vampires can do is grit is fangs and bear it.
