WARNING: The following contains mild spoilers for Avengers #38 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Jason Keith, and VC's Cory Petit, on sale now.

At the start of Avengers' "Age of Khonshu" storyline, Moon Knight attacked some of the world's most powerful superheroes to steal their powers and gift them to his god, Khonshu. With these abilities, the moon god remade the world in his image, while he continued to amass power in order to be able to stop the oncoming threat of Mephisto. The deity had a vision of a universe in flames, a horrific future that was the work of the Marvel Universe's version of the devil -- and Khonshu made it his mission to take all the powers of the Avengers to stop him.

Now, in Avengers #38, Khonshu has been defeated, thanks in no small part to Moon Knight, and the god's brief, titular age has come to an end. But the threat of Mephisto still lingers, which is why Black Panther offers Moon Knight a spot on the superhero team, an offer that he refuses.

Although Moon Knight began the "Age of Khonshu" by helping his god take over the world, he eventually turned on him and bonded with the Phoenix Force instead. With this, Moon Knight truly believed that he would be the only one powerful enough to stop Mephisto. However, in Avengers #37, Marc Spector and the Phoenix were separated, and he was left as simply Moon Knight once more. Now, the threat of Khonshu is no more and the villainous deity is imprisoned in the dungeons of Asgard. Although some members of Earth's Mightiest Heroes also want Moon Knight arrested for what he did, the team's chairman, Black Panther, makes a different call entirely. In fact, T'Challa meets with Moon Knight, and he asks him to become the newest member of the team.

After all, Black Panther recognizes Spector's skills, and his drive to stop Mephisto. T'Challa asks him to repair the damage he's done from the inside, and to help the team better prepare for the coming of Mephisto. The offer is surprising, considering the Avengers spent the better part of the last few months fighting Moon Knight, but it also makes sense. Black Panther isn't one to hold a grudge. He's a strategist, first and foremost, and he knows the team stands a better chance to face what will come next with Moon Knight aboard. However, the only problem is that Moon Knight has no interest in becoming the latest addition to Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Black Panther may not hold a grudge, but Spector seemingly does. He tried his best to save the world and instead of helping, the Avengers fought him at every turn. He doesn't want anything more to do with any of this, so he decides to simply go back doing what he does best: beating bad guys to a pulp in darkly-lit alleys.

Moon Knight Mjolnir Avengers

Moon Knight basically leaves Black Panther hanging. While the street-level hero tried to take on the biggest threat in the universe, he instead chooses to go back to what he did before. It's an unfortunate regression for the character, given that he proved to be a real powerhouse in the "Age of Khonshu" storyline. It would have been great to see the dynamic between the Avengers and him as an official member, especially after he essentially beat all of them in battle.

For the time being, Moon Knight has washed his hands of Mephisto. Now, it's up to Black Panther and the Avengers to stop him. But hopefully, Moon Knight will reconsider and join the team before all hell breaks loose -- literally.
