Depending on who you ask, the Avengers' intrapersonal dynamics could be closest to any number a variety of social groups: that of coworkers, a family, even a military unit. While the truth of the matter really depends on the piece of media at hand, the Avengers have plenty of one-on-one dynamics that define the team's heroes.

10 The Hank Pym/Iron Man Rivalry Is Mostly One-Sided

When Tony Stark and Hank Pym first helped found the Avengers, the two took measure of each other as men of science. Stark's expertise lay primarily in engineering, while Pym's knowledge spread the impressive breadth of biology, chemistry, physics, and robotics. However, Pym still became quite jealous of Stark.

Tony Stark's suave charm and good looks made the Hank Pym jealous, despite his prolific knowledge. This would partially inspire Pym to develop Ultron and to adopt new identities, particularly that of Yellowjacket. Even though Stark never saw Pym as anything more than a friend, Pym's jealousy made him view the Armored Avenger as a rival first.

9 Hawkeye And She-Hulk Had Schoolyard Chemistry

Hawkeye rides a motorcycle away from She-Hulk while she shouts, "She-Hulk hate being teased!"

Each a brash second-stringer with a heart of gold and a penchant for getting into trouble, Hawkeye and She-Hulk are some of the most fan-favorite members of the Avengers. The two first met in the Jim Shooter era of the team and quickly developed a flirtatious, if antagonistic, relationship.

Clint Barton and Jen Walters' fiery tempers meant the two had certain difficulty getting along. In fact, their initial encounter saw She-Hulk flip Hawkeye's cab after he tagged her taillight with an arrow. Despite this raucous start, the characters would come to see each other as friends, even having a child together in an alternate universe.

8 Wonder Man And Vision Think Too Similarly

Wonder Man tries to hit the Vision while the Vision phases

While some characters clash because of their differences, others do it because of their similarities. Such is the case for Wonder Man and the Vision, especially considering Ultron used Wonder Man's brainwaves to create the Vision's mind.

Upon his return to life, Simon Williams became particularly uneasy regarding another person having his mind without his consent. The confusion was furthered by Williams's attraction to the Scarlet Witch, Vision's partner at the time. The characters came to blows regarding this on multiple occasions, but ultimately reconciled, with Williams once again offering his brainwaves to replicate Vision's mind when it got wiped.

7 Black Panther And Namor Are Hardly Allies

Namor and the Black Panther fight in Marvel Comics

Much like his relationship with many others, Namor's relationship with the Black Panther was founded in part on pride. These two heads-of-state didn't initially distrust each other, but their high-powered status in the Marvel Universe led them to clash time and time again.

When Hawkeye split from the main Avengers team to lead the West Coast branch, he attracted a new brand of heroes. From cursed were-women like Tigra to masked vigilantes like Moon Knight, the West Coast Avengers were full of weird superheroes.

A major exception to this rule was conservative, state-sponsored member U.S. Agent. Like Hawkeye, John Walker was headstrong and didn't like taking orders. Hawkeye and his star-spangled subordinate fought so often it resulted in the suspension of both from the team. Even today the two retain animosity, evidenced by the fact Hawkeye took great pleasure in knocking out Walker in a recent issue of Thunderbolts.

5 Namor And Hercules Made The Other's Royal Blood Boil

The Crown Prince of Atlantis and the Lion of Olympus have a lot in common: they're strong, they're proud, and at one point, they were on the Avengers together. This combination of personality traits didn't make for a peaceful team, and the two frequently butted heads.

4 Hawkeye And Hawkeye Prove That Hawkeye Will Hawkeye

Hawkeyes Clint Barton and Kate Bishop release their bows after firing

Clint Barton's hardheadedness and capacity for sarcasm are a huge part of what defines him as a character, so it should come as no surprise to learn that Kate Bishop, the next bearer of the Hawkeye name, has those things in spades. Since their first meeting, Hawkeye and Hawkeye have been as much rivals as anything else.

The Barton/Bishop dynamic is built on a core of friendship. Although each character constantly teases the other, there is much love in their relationship. Exploring the mentor-mentee relationship of these two characters was a key dynamic of the early 2010s Fraction/Aja/Hollingsworth run on Hawkeye.

3 Iron Man And Captain America Have Lost Each Other's Trust

The majority of the Avengers' history saw Captain America and Iron Man as charismatic co-leaders of the team. Perhaps more importantly, it also saw them hold a strong friendship. However, the two drifted apart during the events of Operation: Galactic Storm, when Iron Man sought to kill the Kree Supreme Intelligence and Cap sought to keep it alive.

2 Hulk And Thor Wonder Who's Stronger

Ever since Hulk and Thor stomped and thundered their way onto the comics page in the early 1960s, fans have wanted to know which of the two would win in a fight. In-universe, characters have wondered about this as well, not least of all the Jade Giant and Goldilocks themselves.

Hulk and Thor generally work together well, but have always relished the opportunity to test the other in battle. Time and again, the two have fought, but a true victor has never been conclusive. Mighty as they may be, the powerhouses of the Avengers still seek to determine who is the strongest.

1 Captain America And Hawkeye Became Rivals The Moment They Met

60s Captain America and Hawkeye joke with each other

When Hawkeye joined the nascent Avengers in the sixteenth issue of the title, he brought a loud mouth and disruptive attitude alongside his bow and arrows. The freshly crowned Captain America didn't take well to Hawkeye's anti-authoritarian stance, and Hawkeye didn't take well to Cap's moderate demeanor.

Over hundreds of issues, Captain America and Hawkeye went from antagonists to fast friends. Captain America taught Hawkeye to fight and lead, while Hawkeye helped Cap integrate into the modern world and keep his faith in humanity. Hawkeye's greatest teacher and Cap's greatest student, the two have maintained a healthy rivalry ever since.
