Avengers: The Kang Dynasty star Jonathan Majors recently indicated that the upcoming fifth installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise will pose some big questions.

Major discussed Avengers: The Kang Dynasty's heady subject matter in an interview with Variety. "We're dealing with myths," he said. "You know, what is a Kang? What is a -- what is movie? What is an MCU movie? What does that mean, what does that look like? Those are the questions we're asking. But all of that works when it's grounded and really, really, really tucked into the given circumstances of what's going on between these people, and what we can illuminate for ourselves a species." When his role as Avengers: Kang Dynasty's titular villain was then brought up, Majors responded, "Look, what's a villain?"

Marvel Studios first announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. It is currently slated to serve as the penultimate installment in the MCU Phase Six, otherwise known as "The Multiverse Saga," which its direct sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, will conclude. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will helm Kang Dynasty, working from a script by Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania scribe Jeff Loveness.

Who Are Avengers: Secret Wars' Writer and Director?

Although many fans initially assumed that Cretton would also call the shots on Avengers: Secret Wars, recent reports indicate that this isn't the case. Instead, Cretton will apparently vacate the director's chair for Kang Dynasty's sequel in favor of another, as-yet-unnamed filmmaker. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's Ryan Coogler is one of several alleged frontrunners to direct Secret Wars, however, Marvel Studios is yet to publicly comment on who will helm the hotly-anticipated film.

By contrast, the identity of Avengers: Secret Wars' writer is now out in the open. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron will reportedly pen the sixth Avengers installment's script, taking up the baton from Loveness. Waldron has previous experience with multiverse-related MCU projects. Aside from the Doctor Strange sequel, he also created and served as head writer on Loki Season 1, which introduced the multiverse concept to MCU continuity. Loki also marked Majors' entry into the shared universe, as he portrayed an alternate universe incarnation of Kang known as "He Who Remains."

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty arrives in theaters on May 2, 2025, followed a year later by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 1, 2026.
