So much is still unknown about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve seen pictures of Spider-Man: Far From Home filming, and the first Captain Marvel trailer dropped about a month ago. As far as Phase Four goes, very little is known, so MCU fans have taken to rampant speculation to pass the time until we get those answers. A lot of these theories can be found on Reddit and various corners of the Internet. It seems like MCU fans are always looking for updates on these films, and leaked set and merchandise photos have fueled even more rumors about what’s going to happen in Avengers 4.

Avengers 4 is set to be the culmination of over a decade of storytelling. It will be the 22nd installment in the MCU, which is both mind-boggling and endlessly exciting. Avengers 4 will ultimately affect the future films coming out of this universe in a permanent way, so it's no wonder that fans are getting antsy about more Avengers 4 details. With the release of the film set at May 3rd for the as yet untitled Infinity War sequel, the time has come to begin speculating in earnest. Here at CBR, we’ve done some of the work for you MCU fans! We may not be an all-powerful being with an all-powerful gauntlet, but Internet sleuthing is our superpower. We’ve rounded up 5 things we already know will happen, 5 we know won’t and 5 we hope happens in Avengers 4. Potential spoilers ahead... we think.

15 KNOW WILL HAPPEN: BYE CAPTAIN AMERICA

We’ve known for a while that Chris Evans’ contract to play Captain America was up. However, this did not prepare us adequately for the emotions we would feel when Chris said his goodbye to the Captain America character he played for almost a decade.

When he officially wrapped on Avengers 4 on October 4th, Chris tweeted “it was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.” It certainly sounds like goodbye, but we’re still not ready.

14 KNOW WON’T HAPPEN: THE TITLE WILL BE REVEALED SOON

There has been so much speculation about what the official title will be for Avengers 4. Whatever the title ends up being, we know that Marvel Studios is keeping it under wraps for as long as they can, as the title will likely be a spoiler.

According to an interview Kevin Feige did with Collider in June, he said the title would be released “after the Captain Marvel teaser probably… it will be towards the end of the year.” Towards the end of the year is pretty vague, and since the Captain Marvel teaser trailer came and went about a month ago, it’s looking like we won’t be getting that title anytime soon. Maybe Marvel Studios will release it in December as a holiday gift to its fanbase? We can only hope.

13 HOPE HAPPENS: CASSIE BECOMES A HERO LIKE HER DAD

This hope is based on the rumor that an older Cassie will appear in Avengers 4. Since there is casting to support this theory, we’re hoping that there’s a payoff from what Cassie said in Ant-Man and the Wasp.

In the Ant-Man sequel, Cassie and Scott’s relationship is further developed, and she says she wants to help people. She also thinks she’d be a good sidekick for her dad. It’s possible that a future Cassie could suit up to be a Young Avenger, which she does in the comics. If so, we’d love to see the beginning of the new generation of MCU heroes in Avengers 4.

12 KNOW WILL HAPPEN: SOME SNAPPED CHARACTERS WILL BE BACK

Filming for Spider-Man: Far From Home wrapped this month. Also announced this month was that Ryan Coogler is coming back to write and direct the Black Panther sequel. Peter Parker and T’Challa were both dusted in Infinity War; therefore, their characters will have to come back in Avengers 4 for their sequels to make any sense.

As far as how they come back, that’s purely speculation at this point. A lot of fans have postulated that given Doctor Strange’s involvement, we could be looking at the beginning of multiverses in the MCU where the heroes can travel to different realities. The snapped characters could, in fact, be gone and stay gone… but in that specific reality.

11 KNOW WON’T HAPPEN: BRUCE & THE HULK REMAIN DISCONNECTED

Bruce Banner and Hulk don’t have a harmonious relationship, which was further exacerbated in Avengers: Infinity War. Throughout Infinity War, Hulk refuses to take over and help, which put Bruce in the battle at Wakanda with armor and a gung-ho spirit.

If the Avengers are going to beat Thanos, they’re going to need all the help they can get. Captain Marvel is coming, we know that, but they’re also going to need the big green guy. Whatever is going on with Hulk, he and Bruce are going to have to work through their issues for them to stand a chance.

10 HOPE HAPPENS: QUANTUM REALM CONNECTS CAPTAIN MARVEL

Captain Marvel Brie Larson Powers Up Glow

The film that will directly precede Avengers 4 is Captain Marvel. The film before Captain Marvel was Ant-Man and the Wasp, where we saw more of the Quantum Realm than before, and Janet mentioned there was something called “time vortexes.”

With Captain Marvel taking place in the '90s, yet we haven’t seen her anywhere until now, time travel could explain her late arrival to the fight against Thanos. The Quantum Realm could be the perfect place for her to be until she’s needed. Last we left Scott, he was stuck in the Quantum Realm, so he could very well run into Captain Marvel in a time vortex and bring her to the fight.

9 KNOW WILL HAPPEN: IT’S GOING TO GET WORSE FOR SCARLET WITCH

Scarlet Witch has been through a lot in her MCU history alone. She’s a Marvel character that’s had a lot of bad stuff happen to her (like her children literally being erased from existence), but her MCU counterpart hasn’t exactly had an easy go of it either. She’s lost her brother, and she’s had to destroy an Infinity Stone in her boyfriend’s head.

According to Elizabeth Olsen herself, this isn’t going to be the end of Scarlet Witch’s misfortune. At ACE Comic-Con in Chicago this month, Olsen teased fans saying “it’s only going to get worse.” Worse than being snapped out of existence? We have no idea what’s in store for her next, but if it’s worse than her demise, perhaps it’s better that we don’t know.

8 KNOW WON’T HAPPEN: THANOS WILL LEAVE PEACEFULLY

Thanos Wearing Armor in Infinity War

Though Thanos looked like he was finally at peace at the end of Infinity War, that peace is likely contingent upon his changes to the universe being permanent. Whenever he catches wind that the Avengers are still continuing to right his wrongs, his meditative vacay will probably come to an end.

Supporting this theory is Avengers 4 promo art that features, among other things, Thanos in armor. He was in armor in his appearances leading up to Infinity War, while in Infinity War he mostly relied on the power of the Infinity Gauntlet alone. Since the Gauntlet looks like it was destroyed, at least partially, at the end of Infinity War, if Thanos fighting again, it makes sense that he would suit up.

7 HOPE HAPPENS: CAPTAIN MARVEL MEETS RHODES

Those who are fans of the Captain Marvel comics know that Carol Danvers and James Rhodes have a special bond. Kelly Sue DeConnick featured this relationship in her run with Captain Marvel, and even in the Civil War II series, Rhodes was a huge reason why Carol had so much emotional attachment to the outcome of the fight.

Even in Battleworld, where alternate realities combined, Carol and Rhodey are linked. Because these two characters are so important to each other in the comics, it would be a nice nod if the MCU versions had a special moment to at least meet or even have a conversation.

6 KNOW WILL HAPPEN: A LARGER ROLE FOR PEPPER POTTS

Pepper Potts had her big fighting moment at the end of Iron Man 3, but since then, we haven’t seen very much of her. As the original MCU love interest, the only one who has stuck around all these years, we would love to see Pepper Potts get more moments to shine, and it seems like we’re getting our wish.

In a leaked set photo, Gwyneth Paltrow is in armor in front of a green screen. If this picture is to be believed, Pepper Potts will become Rescue in Avengers 4, an armored version of the Pepper Potts character that debuted in the comics in 2009. Even if this isn’t true, with Tony and Pepper’s conversation about having babies in Infinity War, we have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of Pepper in Avengers 4.

5 KNOW WON’T HAPPEN: HAWKEYE AND ANT-MAN IN MINOR ROLES

Hawkeye and Ant-Man concept art

Noticeably missing from the trailers and posters for Infinity War were Hawkeye and Ant-Man. In the movie itself, their whereabouts are explained with a line of dialogue. Scott is under house arrest, and Clint wants to be with his family. No one can blame them for their absence.

However, we know that since they were MIA in Infinity War, the Marvel creatives must have big plans in store for Hawkeye and Ant-Man. With Scott stuck in the Quantum Realm at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, some time will need to be taken to explain how he gets out. In addition, leaked art for Avengers 4 showcase Clint in a dark get-up, suggesting that he will turn into Ronin -- but we’ll have to see if that turns out to be true!

4 HOPE HAPPENS: LOKI RETURNS

Loki is a perpetually fascinating character to watch. We never quite know what his intentions are, but we know that deep down, he loves his brother Thor. While this love was often cast aside for Loki’s ambition and survival instinct, in Infinity War, the unthinkable happens. Loki sacrifices himself in an attempt to save his brother.

Would he really do that, though? We’re not entirely convinced that Loki is gone. While it would be a good send-off for this character to end so nobly, we’re hoping that it’s another of Loki’s illusions. Even better, it’d be interesting to see Thor navigate Hel to bring his brother back.

3 KNOW WILL HAPPEN: TIME TRAVEL

The Avengers battle of NY

We’re pretty sure about this one based on leaked set photos. In these photos, we’ve seen various characters in their looks from previous films, such as Chris Hemsworth sporting his long pre-Thor: Ragnarok hair. Fans have pointed out that it looks like these characters are in their "Battle of New York" outfits from the first Avengers film.

Piecing this together, it’s pretty fair to say that there will be time travel involved in Avengers 4. The Avengers could be traveling through time to get to the Infinity Stones ahead of Thanos. At the very least, there will be flashbacks where we see events from a different perspective. Time travel could also help with bringing Captain Marvel into the fight.

2 KNOW WON’T HAPPEN: WAKANDA WILL BE IN DISARRAY

Avengers-Infinity-War-Trailer-Wakanda-Shot

Wakanda was the battleground for the big fight between the Avengers and Thanos at the end of Infinity War, so not only is the environment affected but T’Challa, the King and Black Panther of Wakanda, is seemingly gone. For most countries, this would signal a period of upheaval.

But not Wakanda. In the comics, Shuri has had to step up to be Black Panther in T’Challa’s absence. In Shuri #1, her first solo comic written by Nnedi Okorafor, when Wakanda is in trouble, the women would meet in a tradition called “the Elephant’s Trunk.” They are representative of the different Wakandan women, and they decide what needs to be done for Wakanda to remain strong. Wakanda will be just fine.

1 HOPE HAPPENS: CAPTAIN AMERICA REUNITES WITH PEGGY CARTER

Some of us are still not over the fact that Agent Carter didn’t get picked up for a third season. Going back even further, some of us are still not over the fact that Peggy and Cap never got that dance. By the time Steve was thawed, Peggy was a very old bed-ridden woman.

To honor our hero, who is most likely going to die in Avengers 4 (something that some of us will not be over for a very, very long time), we hope that Steve and Peggy get their moment. If the time travel rumors turn out to be true, Steve can go back to the past and live out his remaining years with Peggy. At the very least, let the couple dance!
