A new batch of set photos surfaced earlier today, not only confirming that a set of earlier concept art was legit, but that reshoots on Avengers 4 are finally underway. This was expected, of course, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed pickups would take place "later this year," when they'd be able to reassemble a majority of the cast. Some of those involved with the reshoots include Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd and Bruce Banner himself, Mark Ruffalo. However, according to Ruffalo, the reshoots aren't simply just for the sake of additional photography -- they're also to finish the film.
The actor made the comment during a guest appearance on The Marvelists: The MCU Podcast with Peter Melnick and Eddie Wilson. Interestingly enough, the interview seems to have taken place a bit ago, but only officially hit today as photos from the set of Avengers 4 began to circulate. Ruffalo, of course, was not in those photos, but he very much appears to be included in the additional photography, explaining that when the cast returns for reshoots, they're going to "finish the movie."
"Well we're doing reshoots starting in September. And then we'll go back into the international tour, we'll go on tour. Then you guys will get the second installment. Which we don't even know what it's gonna be yet. We're not just doing reshoots, we're going to finish the movie, which we really didn't get to finish totally when we left it last year."
Again, it's worth noting that reshoots are often planned early on in production with dates having been worked out to ensure cast members are able to return to work (if needed) for additional photography. While the fact that Avengers 4 is set to release in approximately eight months may seem worrying to some -- this is very typical and something we saw happen with its predecessor, Avengers: Infinity War.
As you'll recall, the scene in which Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Banner and Wong confront Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian upon their arrival on Earth was famously included as part of reshoots for Avengers: Infinity War. It's entirely possible these are the types of scenes the cast is returning to film, rather than the actual ending of the film, as Ruffalo simply stated they will be finishing the film. Of course, there's also the possibility that directors Joe and Anthony Russo are simply shooting various takes on certain scenes that are vital to the film in order to keep the cast surprised -- much like how they shot the death scenes for Infinity War.
One thing that seems easy to rule out, though? That Marvel Studios is reshooting the ending to include any Fox characters in the film. It's a rumor that is sure to be brought up at some point or another. However, while the deal is moving ahead between Disney and Fox, Feige has already confirmed it'll be some time before we see the mutants or Marvel's first family join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it seems safe to rule that out as a possibility.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers 4 stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Brie Larson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Evangeline Lilly and Josh Brolin. The film is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
