Avengers: Infinity War left audiences around the world emotionally rocked. Fans needed time to recover from the shock of seeing half the world snapped out of existence. In case you’ve been under a rock, the film ended with the Mad Titan Thanos getting all the Infinity Stones, then using the Infinity Gauntlet to snap his fingers and turn half the universe to dust to, in his words, “balance things.” This included many of our favorite heroes like Sam Wilson, Peter Quill, Doctor Strange, Black Panther and, heartbreakingly, Peter Parker fading away in Tony’s arms. And then the credits just rolled with half the good guys gone. The most common question heard around movie theater lobbies was "what’s next?"
How will Avengers 4 bring back the lost heroes and resolve all the loose threads of Infinity War? Though we know absolutely nothing about what is supposed to happen in the next installment, we have to imagine at least T’Challa and Peter Parker are coming back, as they have sequels in the works. However, just because we know they’re returning, doesn’t mean they’ll be the same heroes they were when they left. Even if they don’t remember what happened, this seems like the kind of experience that would stick with someone. This is true of all the characters, so we started to wonder what the fans were saying about the future of their favorite characters. With that in mind, check out crazy fan theories about Avengers 4 characters listed from maybe possible to completely insane.
25 DRAX: FINALLY GETS HIS REVENGE ON THANOS
From the moment we met Drax, it was clear he had one thing on his mind. Vengeance for his lost family. He only cares about finding Ronan and making him pay for taking away his family.
Once he gets it, he turns his attention to Thanos, Ronan’s boss. In Infinity War, he almost got his comeuppance on Titan. Thanks Star-Lord. This has led some fans to wonder if things might come full circle with Drax finally getting closure and defeats Thanos. As a supporting character, Drax won’t get the final blow, but he definitely should be in the fight.
24 THOR: REVENGE FUELS A MORE VICIOUS THOR
In his first film, Thor transforms from entitled royal jerk to noble hero. However, that change has actually been continuing over all his appearances, as Ragnarok concludes with him finally stepping up and becoming King of Asgard.
This makes everything he loses in Infinity War even more tragic. Coupled with him not stopping Thanos from snapping his fingers, we may see Thor become more vicious and filled with rage as he tries to save the galaxy. After Chris Hemsworth went full comedy in Ragnarok, it would be fascinating to see him turn into The Punisher in Avengers 4.
23 GROOT: GROWS OUT OF STORMBREAKER
We already know that our favorite sentient tree can regrow himself from pieces of his body, and ome fans have run with that idea and theorized that he can grow out of Thor’s axe Stormbreaker.
When Thor makes his new weapon, Groot uses a piece of his body for the handle. While this seems plausible, director Joe Russo has different thoughts on the idea. “I don't know if every piece of him that detaches ... can grow a future version of him, but who's to say? That's an interesting question.” Perhaps he and his brother have different plans for Groot’s return.
22 CAPTAIN AMERICA: SACRIFICES HIMSELF TO HELP TONY
If there’s one thing we know about Steve Rogers, it’s that he’s ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good at a moment’s notice. We learned that using the Soul Stone requires sacrificing something you love.
It’s only a short jump to imagine that if Tony needs to wield the Gauntlet to fix the universe, Steve will jump into the void without hesitating. It would be a heartbreaking yet lovely way to reconcile their relationship. He’s already perished to save the world once, what’s one more time.
21 WINTER SOLDIER: SACRIFICES HIMSELF FOR CAP
Bucky Barnes just wants to find some peace. After spending years being brainwashed and used by HYDRA, he’s finally gotten some time to himself in Wakanda. That is sadly interrupted when The Black Order shows up with Thanos’ army.
Bucky is one of the many heroes turned to dust, but we suspect he will be back once the others fix everything. However, his return could be shortlived, as he is definitely the type of hero who would sacrifice himself so that Steve can wield the Soul Stone and use the Gauntlet to defeat Thanos.
20 ANT-MAN: ENDS UP IN THE FUTURE
At the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scott is stuck in the Quantum Realm after everyone is turned to dust. With the idea that there are time vortexes there, fans have wondered if Scott will end up in the future to find some solution to reversing the effects of the Gauntlet.
With rumors swirling that an older version of Scott’s daughter Cassie has been cast for Avengers 4, this seems like a real possibility. We all think time travel will play a role in the movie, it’s just a question of how big and in what way?
19 THANOS: DEFEATED BY NEBULA
The line of people who want Thanos dead is pretty long, but other than Gamora there may be no one with a greater claim to finishing him than Nebula. Not only did he constantly pit her against Gamora, he had her interrogated and altered when she lost.
Thanos has never made his dislike of Nebula a secret, fueling her hatred of him. The problem for him is that of all the people in the galaxy who want to end him, she’s the one who knows his weaknesses and plans.
18 CAPTAIN MARVEL: THE KEY TO DEFEATING THANOS
The Infinity War post credits scene didn’t disappoint when Nick Fury picked up an old school pager and sent a distress signal to Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel. We know that Captain Marvel will be a prequel set in the '90s, but we also assume that some part of it will lead into Avengers 4.
Most fans think that Carol will be the hero who comes in to save everyone or that she has some key piece of information to swing things in the heroes direction. We don’t know what role she’ll play, but we’re guessing it’s a big one.
17 FALCON: THE NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA
It’s no secret that Chris Evans will leave the role of Steve Rogers following Avengers 4. This doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ve seen the last of Captain America and in the comics, both Sam and Bucky have taken on the mantle.
If Steve sacrifices himself to save the world, it would make sense that one of his friends would carry the shield to honor him. Storyline wise it’s a better fit for Sam to takeover, as Bucky should stay in Wakanda and continue his development there.
16 SHURI: THE NEW BLACK PANTHER
T’Challa is gone. It’s sad, but something we must get used to. This means that the mantle of Black Panther passes to the next person in the royal line, which would be Shuri. We’ve seen this in the comics, so it’s not a completely new idea.
Letitia Wright was the breakout star of Black Panther, so any chance to see her take center stage would be awesome. Shuri may receive some competition from M’Baku, but our money is on the princess to do what it takes to protect her family.
15 LOKI: LIVES
Loki fakes his end the way other people change their pants, so even though we saw his throat crushed by Thanos, we still aren’t buying it. Some eagle eyed viewers have broken things down and discovered the secret to Loki’s most consistent trick.
He always attacks with his right hand. However, the one time we saw him use his left in The Dark World, it turned out to be an illusion. In Infinity War, he attacks Thanos with his left, leading some fans to believe that Loki has once again deceived everyone and will return to fight alongside his brother.
14 THE VISION: RESURRECTED BY SHURI
When last we saw The Vision he was lifeless after having the Mind Stone ripped from his body. Right before that, he was in Shuri’s lab having his systems examined. We all know that she is the smartest person in the MCU, so there’s no way she didn’t download a detailed copy of his programming.
Thinking that he will have insight into how the Infinity Stones work, we can totally believe that Shuri will find a way to reactivate him, even if he does lose some of his uniqueness in the process.
13 SCARLET WITCH: TURNS EVIL
Longtime Marvel readers know that Wanda Maximoff has a complicated relationship with her powers. On several occasions they have driven her mad and turned her evil. Since we’ve just started to get to know Wanda, that side of her personality hasn’t been explored yet.
With the studio looking to set up the next phase of movies and find an entry for the X-Men, Wanda coming back evil would be a familiar way to introduce mutants and their stories. It would also give Elizabeth Olsen a chance to really shine.
12 DOCTOR STRANGE: HID THE REAL TIME STONE
The one question fans ask themselves over and over after multiple Infinity War viewings is why Doctor Strange chose that particular outcome out of the 14,000,605 he saw. Especially when he made it abundantly clear that he would not trade the Time Stone for Tony’s life.
Stephen Strange is a meticulous man that always has a plan, so we have to think he had one here. One theory making the rounds is that he didn’t give Thanos the real Stone, but one from another Marvel Universe. If true, this really just leads us to a million more questions.
11 BLACK WIDOW: FALLS IN BATTLE
We don’t know what the future holds for Black Widow, though we know that she’s set to get her own movie. She has a special connection with The Hulk, so she she might see her purpose as getting him back in the fight.
Bruce needs to get angry to trigger a transformation, so maybe Hulk also needs some sort of emotional jumpstart. If she falls in battle that would not only trigger The Hulk, but lead to a more powerful and scary Hulk than we’ve ever seen.
10 STAR-LORD: USES HIS CELESTIAL POWERS
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced us to Peter’s celestial father Ego. We learned that Peter also has these abilities within, though he seemingly lost them when he destroyed Ego to save the galaxy.
What if they’re still dormant somewhere inside him? It would be really convenient if he could use them when he needs them most. Perhaps to save his lost love Gamora? It would certainly redeem him from messing things up on Titan and giving Thanos a chance to fight back.
9 BLACK PANTHER: LOSES THE THRONE
T’Challa is a new king still learning his way around the throne. His people were still recovering from the civil war with Killmonger when an alien invasion hit their borders. That was quickly followed by half of them turning to dust. It hasn’t been the smoothest reign.
We’ve heard rumors that Avengers 4 will have a time jump. We don’t know who’s been ruling Wakanda in that time, but it could well be that when T’Challa comes back he may not have a throne to return to. This would set up the story for the Black Panther sequel.
8 SPIDER-MAN: A NEW SPIDER EMERGES
Since Spider-Man: Far From Home is currently in production, we know Peter survives Avengers 4. The real question is does he come out of this as the only Spider hero of the MCU? If there is indeed a time jump between films, cities will be in chaos and heroes will be needed more than ever.
It’s already been established that he attends school with a girl named Cindy and lives in the same neighborhood as Miles Morales, so we know other Spider heroes are nearby. With him not around, maybe one of them decides to rise up?
7 GAMORA: OBTAINS THE GAUNTLET
The flashback of how Gamora was “adopted” by Thanos made it clear how important she was to him. When he used her to get the Soul Stone, we saw how crucial she was to everything. The appearance of her younger self to Thanos after his plan has worked lets us know she’s still alive in the Soul Stone.
Gamora has devoted herself to protecting the galaxy and hates Thanos. These motivations could make her strong enough to find a way back into the world and use her connection to the Stones to use the Gauntlet to right all the wrongs.
6 COULSON: RETURNS
This one is admittedly a long shot, but stranger things have happened. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ended its fifth season with Coulson and May in Tahiti as Coulson prepared to live out the final days of his life. However, Thanos’ snap probably changed those plans.
If there’s a way for everything to be reset, maybe it also means Coulson doesn’t die. With he and May resigned to letting the kids take over S.H.I.E.L.D., perhaps Coulson decides to rejoin his old friends The Avengers, and bring along the calvary.
5 HAWKEYE: IS A SKRULL
Everyone has a guess for the reason behind Hawkeye’s absence in Infinity War. One of the most out there theories has inventive fans claiming that Clint is actually a Skrull in disguise. They say he could have been replaced as far back as The Avengers, during the Battle of New York.
While this would be a game changing turn of events, we haven’t seen the slightest hint that Clint is anything other than a loyal father, husband, friend and hero. Of course, that’s the point of a Skrull, you don’t know until it’s too late.
4 IRON MAN: SORCERER SUPREME
No one was more shocked than Tony when Doctor Strange gave Thanos the Time Stone to save him. Strange did this for a very particular reason, as he said “it’s the only way.” One theory posits that Strange saw Tony as the only one who could save everyone.
Seeing Strange use magic makes Tony think that’s the only way to defeat Thanos and uses his time to become a sorcerer. At his core, Tony is a scientist, so despite everything he’s seen, he will always come back to finding a scientific solution to everything.
3 BRUCE BANNER: GOD OF MISCHIEF
For a being so powerful, The Hulk sure was shook after he got beat down by Thanos. Bruce can’t access him or even get him to answer. Coupled with another more plausible theory, some fans have wondered if Bruce is really Bruce, or is it Loki pretending to be Bruce.
If Loki did in fact fake his demise, perhaps he saw pretending to be The Hulk as a way to escape. Heimdall not realizing this transports him to Earth and Loki keeps the ruse going. If true, where is the real Bruce Banner?
2 NEBULA: THE NEXT BIG BAD
Avengers 4 is a definite ending, which means it’s time to move on to Phase Four and whatever the plan for that is. If Thanos has been the big bad of the first three phases, who will take over going forward? What about his daughter?
In the comics, Nebula gets the Gauntlet and defeats Thanos, though it turns her evil. This seems unlikely as we think the next phase may move away from the Infinity Gauntlet, but we’d still love to see Karen Gillan go full on take over the galaxy bad.
1 NICK FURY: SAW IT COMING
In 10 years, everything we’ve learned about Nick Fury has told us he’s a man who’s prepared for every disaster. His emergency signal to Captain Marvel tells us he obviously knew this was coming. So, how did he know and does he have a plan to fix the universe?
There are those who believe that somewhere in his travels, Nick met the Ancient One who told him of this impending doom. When he met Carol Danvers, he realized she was their savior and made a plan. This seems like a lot of ground to lay, even for Marvel.
