The Avengers have faced multiple threats since their reformation. From ancient Celestials to the moon god Khonshu, the threats have come fast and furious. And now they are about to contend with another cosmic force while learning of a villain's death.
The synopsis for Avengers #38, which begins the "Enter The Phoenix" arc, will see Earth's Mightiest Heroes deal with the threat of the returning Phoenix Force. Meanwhile, Mephisto's death is intertwined with the "untold chapters" of Avengers history. The Phoenix Force was hinted to return at the behest of Namor, who has had a grudge with the surface world.
Mephisto has also been hinted to have a larger history with the Avengers, particularly Iron Man. The two encountered each other during the Stone Age and Howard Stark was hinted to be in the thrall of the demon. However, Mephisto recently met his end at the hands of the moon god Khonshu.
