Avatar 2's cast recently received deep-sea diving lessons in Hawaii to prepare themselves for upcoming underwater sequences. The film's producer, Jon Landau, shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos from the cast's tropical trip.

Avatar's Twitter posted photos so fans could feel like part of the filming process too. In the photos shared, we can see director James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver chatting joyfully aboard a ship, Zoe Saldana smiling happily on-shore and other cast members neck-deep in the ocean waves.

Similar to the original movie, Avatar 2 will take place on the alien planet Pandora, but this time the action will occur underwater as well as on land. Cameron used cutting-edge filming equipment to achieve this feat. Unlike Aquaman, a film that relied on green screens and CGI to create the illusion of underwater action, Cameron actually shot scenes underwater, so it was pivotal that the cast were trained to dive and move and act while submerged to capture the motion as intended.

Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The film arrives in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, followed by Avatar 3 on Dec. 20, 2024 , Avatar 4 on Dec. 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on Dec. 22, 2028.
