James Cameron's The Way of Water has surpassed the overseas earnings for 1997's Titanic.

According to Variety, The Way of Water is now the third-highest-grossing movie in history at the international box office with a total of $1.538 billion, overtaking the spot once held by Titanic, another major blockbuster from Cameron. Now, the Avatar sequel is only behind the international earnings of 2009's Avatar ($2.1 billion) and Avengers: Endgame ($1.9 billion). Endgame is the only film in the top four not directed by Cameron.

The Way of Water has outpaced Titanic internationally, but box office analysts expect the sci-fi sequel to surpass the worldwide cume of the 1997 film by Feb. 14, which would make it the third highest-grossing film in history. At the time of writing, Avatar: The Way of Water is the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time, officially crossing $2 billion at the worldwide box office on Jan. 22. The sequel has surpassed the worldwide total of Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.071 billion) and ranks just behind Avatar ($2.92 billion), Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion).

The Way of Water Dethroned at the Domestic Box Office

This news comes after The Way of Water was dethroned at the domestic box office by M. Night Shyamalan's Knock at the Cabin, which earned $14.2 million in its first weekend. While the lowest opening for any of Shyamalan's previous films, Knock at the Cabin's opening weekend numbers outpaced those of The Way of Water, which earned $10.8 million domestically in its eighth weekend in theaters.

In its seventh weekend in theaters, The Way of Water added $15.7 million to its domestic box office haul, which at the time made for a domestic total of $620 million and a global cume of $2.117 billion. With these numbers, it was the first film to claim the top spot at the box office for seven consecutive weekends since the first Avatar in 2009. With a budget between $350 million and $400 million, Cameron's sequel was reported to be one of the most expensive films ever made. The director previously implied that The Way of Water would need to make over $2 billion worldwide in order to break even. In its fourth weekend in theaters, the film surpassed Jurassic World as the seventh-highest-grossing film of all time with a worldwide total of $1.708 billion.

The Way of Water is set a decade after the events of 2009's Avatar and sees Worthington and Saldaña reprise their respective roles as Jake Sulley and Neytiri. Other returning cast members include Stephen Lang as Colonel Quaritch and Sigourney Weaver. Cameron has planned three more films in the Avatar saga, though the director has stated that Avatar 4 and 5 will depend on the success of the first two sequels, including The Way of Water.
