Dark Horse Comics has announced Avatar: The Next Shadow, a four-part comic book limited series set between the events of director James Cameron's 2009 film Avatar and its upcoming sequel.

Set for launch this January, Avatar: The Next Shadow comes from the creative team of writer Jeremy Barlow (AVP: Thicker Than Blood, Star Wars: Darth Maul - Son of Dathomir) and artist Josh Hood (We Can Never Go Home, JLA: Scary Monsters), with covers by Gui Balbi (Alien: The Original Screenplay). Set "just after" the events of 2009's Avatar, The Next Shadow rejoins the film's main protagonist, Jake Sully, ahead of the 2022 sequel.

"Jake Sully can fight a war, but can he keep the peace?" the comic's official synopsis reads. "Days after the destruction of the Na'vi Hometree, Jake finds himself ill-equipped to defuse the internal conflicts threatening to tear the Omatikaya apart -- and perilously unprepared for a treacherous plot to remove him from the clan forever!"

Written by Jeremy Barlow and illustrated by Josh Hood, Avatar: The Next Shadow #1 goes on sale Jan. 6, 2021 from Dark Horse Comics.

Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 16, 2022, with multiple additional sequels planned.
