Avatar Aang was tasked with defeating the Fire Lord and the Fire Nation in order to restore balance to the world. Being the Avatar meant that Aang had to work to be the most powerful human in the world, a goal which he later achieved. Even so, during his time growing and learning, Avatar Aang was far from invincible.

He had to rely on his friends to watch his back in especially challenging situations, and whenever he found himself in a pickle, his friends were always there to offer a helping hand. Though it was rather uncommon to find Aang in such a predicament, there were times where he would've more or less been done for without help.

10 Aang Got Help From An Unexpected Source When He Was Captured By Zhao

After Sokka and Katara fell ill from being in a storm, Aang went out in search of a treatment for them. He was ambushed by the Yuyan Archers and delivered to Zhao. While bound in chains, he was rescued by a fellow wearing a mask. This turned out to be Zuko, who only wanted to capture Aang himself. That said, it was hard to imagine a scenario where Aang escaped from such a fortified fortress.

9 When Aang Was Trapped With Zuko In The Sun Warrior Temple

Zuko had only recently joined Team Avatar and had the task of teaching firebending to Aang. He suddenly discovered that his firebending had drastically weakened because he no longer had the zeal to fuel it. They journeyed to the ancient civilization of the Sun Warriors to find a new way to learn firebending, only to end up ensnared in a trap designed to retrain intruders. Luckily for them, the place was not as deserted as they thought it was, as the Sun Warrior civilization was secretly alive. They were saved by the inhabitants and even got to meet two dragons.

8 Aang Was In Deep Trouble When Zuko Captured Him At The North Pole

During the Fire Nation's siege on the Northern Water Tribe, Aang journeyed to the Spirit World to seek their help. Katara, who was looking after his physical body was attacked and defeated by Zuko who escaped with Aang's immobile body.

Aang's friends searched for him and found him struggling to escape from Zuko. Because Katara's power is greatly amplified at night, she was able to easily defeat Zuko and save Aang. Even if Aang somehow escaped Zuko, he would have likely frozen to death in the tundra.

7 Aang Was Too Merciful For His Own Good When He Fought Jet

Aang and Katara befriended a fellow known as Jet, who efficiently fought the Fire Nation in his forest. Jet may have had good intentions, but he took it too far when he decided to wipe out a village filled with innocent people just to get at the Fire Nation soldiers there. Katara and Aang found out, and Jet engaged Aang in a fight. Aang spent the whole time holding back and refusing to fight Jet for real. This caused him to be sloppy and led to Jet besting him. It was Katara who came to his aid with a barrage of waterbending attacks, eventually freezing Jet to a tree.

6 Avatar Roku Himself Had To Step In At The Fire Temple On The Crescent Island

Aang and his gang journeyed to a Fire Temple in the Fire Nation in order for Aang to speak to Roku about his visions. He was followed by Zuko and subsequently by Zhao. During his conversation with Avatar Roku, Zhao and his men took their positions waiting to ambush Aang as soon as he stepped out. Sensing the danger, Roku offered a helping hand to Aang who gladly obliged. When the gates opened, it was not Aang that Zhao's men saw, but Avatar Roku who promptly destroyed the temple and sent Zhao and his men packing.

5 Aang Needed Help When He Fought Azula And Zuko While He Was Exhausted

Azula had been relentlessly chasing after Aang and his friends to capture them. Being constantly on the run, the gang could barely get any sleep and were thoroughly exhausted. When they figured out how Azula kept finding them, they came up with a plan to deceive her, but it fell through and Azula confronted them, with Zuko soon joining the fray.

Their three-way battle began explosively, and after Zuko was briefly knocked out, Azula turned on Aang. Aang found himself trapped among falling rubble, but before Azula could deliver the final blow, Katara saved Aang in the nick of time. Sokka, Toph, Iroh and even Zuko soon pitched in to help the heroes out.

4 The Fight Against Hama Nearly Ended In A Catastrophe For Aang

People seemed to have been disappearing in a Fire Nation Town every full moon, and Aang, Sokka and Toph proceeded to investigate while Katara learned waterbending techniques from a woman named Hama. They eventually found out that Hama was behind the people's disappearance thanks to her rare skill known as bloodbending - a skill which let her control people. Katara had already gotten the upper hand in their fight when Aang and Sokka arrived, but Hama wasn't done. She bloodbent them both and eventually set Aang on a collision course with the tip of Sokka's blade. Katara had to instinctively bloodbend Hama to save her friends.

3 Aang Had To Seek "Professional" Help When He Got Arrested On Avatar Day

Aang, Katara and Sokka arrived at an Earth Kingdom town that had a festival known as Avatar Day. Aang was glad to have a festival in his honor but was horrified to see that the festival was in truth a day to mock and deride the Avatar. Aang insisted on proving his innocence in a case that involved his past life, Avatar Kyoshi. Aang was swiftly placed behind bars and he had no choice but to seek help from veteran detective, Sokka. Katara and Sokka travelled far and worked hard to find evidence proving Aang's innocence.

2 Aang Got Help From Toph When They Were Captured By Shin Fu And His Men

Shin Fu believed that Aang and Toph cheated in their match in order to rob him of his money. This infuriated Shin Fu and he and his men ambushed and captured them. After getting their money back, they let Toph go but decided to keep Aang and turn him over to the Fire Nation. Toph returned, challenged them all, and beat them to a pulp to save the day - a true display of strength from the world's greatest earthbender.

1 When Azula Zapped Him With Lightning, Aang Was Pretty Much Dead

During the epic fight at the end of the second season, Aang and Katara were heavily outnumbered by the Dai Li, led by Azula with Zuko fighting by her side. Aang, realizing that their only chance of victory was for him to gain control of the Avatar State, made up his mind to do so. While in the process of mastering the Avatar State, he was unexpectedly shot with lightning by Azula. Katara had no chance but to take Aang and flee Ba Sing Se, and the Fire Nation claimed victory over the Avatar.
