The following contains spoilers for Avatar: The Way of Water, now in theaters and Avatar: The High Ground on sale now from Dark Horse.

As Avatar: The Way of Water proceeds, one of the more intriguing arcs involves Miles Socorro. At first, it's all fun and games as he's the human kid in Jake's runt, thinking he's part of the Na'vi pack. Admittedly, Jake's kids take to him like their own sibling and Spider, as he's affectionately called, is just as devoted to them. So much so, Jake considers him his son, despite his partner Neytiri's disdain as she just doesn't trust mankind, aka the Sky People.

However, a lot of this negativity is due to Miles actually being the son of Colonel Quaritch, Stephen Lang's bloodthirsty military leader. Unfortunately, not much is given about Miles' background, other than he's a kid who got left behind when most humans left Pandora at the end of the first film. Notably, while Miles' mom is omitted from the film completely, Avatar: The High Ground (by Sherri L. Smith, Guilherme Balbi, Michael Atiyeh, and Wes Dzioba) has all the relevant information about her.

Who is Spider's Mom in Avatar 2?

Avatar: The High Ground reveals Spider's mom as Paz Socorro

In Vol. 1 of The High Ground, Spider roams around with Kiri a lot as she tries to discover more about her lineage. She's the child of a Na'vi clone, so they're both intrigued by their pasts. It's then revealed Miles' mom, Paz Socorro, was a soldier in the RDA who Quaritch looked after. They had a secret affair, with Paz having eyes only for the colonel despite all the other soldiers expressing interest.

While fraternizing was forbidden, even the superiors broke rules now and then. Paz ended up having Miles but had to keep him in solitude, so a scandal wouldn't grow at the Pandora base. Unfortunately, Paz was part of the jungle war in the first movie against the Omatikaya tree clan, which resulted in her being shot by arrows in her chopper. She went down and died in the crash. What makes it more tragic is the picture of Miles as a baby on her window, inspiring her to keep fighting.

Paz's Memory is Affecting Miles

Avatar: The High Ground reveals Spider's mom as Paz Socorro

Now, Spider didn't know the woman as he was a mere baby, but he still latches onto her, keeping a photo of her when she was pregnant. He wishes she were around as he doesn't think she was as bad as Quaritch. Interestingly, when Neytiri lashes out at him for influencing her kids to roam the dangerous jungle, Spider fires back, making it clear he's a good person and a victim of circumstance.

After all, her people killed his parents, and he was too young to enter cryosleep to head back to Earth. It led to him being raised by the human-Na'vi alliance, although Neytiri's caustic words and the fact he's missing his mom are still hurting him. In this comic, he clearly wishes he had a more tangible connection to Paz, which is why the sequel has him saving Quaritch's Na'vi clone. Ultimately, Spider doesn't miss his dad -- he misses his mom, which is why part of him may think Quaritch 2.0 can be saved and turned away from the darkness like Paz should have been.
