It was only months ago when Avatar Studios officially announced the development of a full-length feature film continuing the story of the Gaang from Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Since then, few details have been revealed about what audiences might be able to expect.

According to Avatar News, that changed recently with the announcement that the Australian animation studio Flying Bark Productions has been selected to work on the project. The team is known for animated titles such as Disney+'s What If...? series, for which Flying Bark produced four of the nine episodes that comprised Season 1.

Director of production Alexia Gates-Foale stated, "Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are two of the most iconic animated series of our time and we are simply thrilled to play a part in bringing this new story to life... With a company full of creatives and super fans, the Avatar feature is a dream project for the team at Flying Bark."

It was Avatar News that previously suggested the upcoming project would return audiences to Team Avatar, also known as the Gaang, this time as young adults. It was at this year's San Diego Comic-Con where Avatar Studios confirmed and officially announced the upcoming and untitled Team Avatar film-- the first of three standalone feature films set in the Avatar universe. These films are not likely to be seen until at least 2024, according to previous reports. Though it should be noted neither Paramount, Nickelodeon or Avatar Studios have officially announced any release dates for their upcoming projects.

It's uncertain what kind of animation style Flying Bark will utilize for the feature film. The animation style of Marvel Studios' What If...? series combined 2D and 3D animation, which is similar to what previous reports suggested Avatar Studios would use for select projects.

Where Aang and the Gang Left Off

Following the events of Book Three: Fire in Avatar: The Last Airbender, the members of Team Avatar appeared throughout Legend of Korra as adults, shaping Republic City and the Four Nations. In fact, several directly aided Korra in her journey. Prior to this, the Gaang's stories continued in the comic books published by Dark Horse Comics. Moreover, writer Tim Hedrick confirmed on the Avatar: Braving the Elements podcast, that the events of the comics will tie into Avatar Studios' upcoming projects, though he did not specify how exactly or which projects.

Avatar Studios' upcoming feature films do not yet have an official release date.
