The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra is expanding with the announcement of Avatar Studios, a new animation studio dedicated to making films and television shows set within the Avatar universe for Nickelodeon, the upcoming Paramount+ and other third-party platforms. The studio's first project will be an animated film set to begin production later this year, and both the original series' creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will run the studio.

While there's no doubt that Avatar Studios will come up with plenty of new stories with new characters, the studio should also look to the past for inspiration for a potential new animated series. Specifically, the studio should look to Avatar Kyoshi.

In the world of Avatar, Kyoshi was the longest living human and longest serving Avatar. She was known for her no nonsense approach to solving the world's problems, believing that "only justice will bring peace." She is widely considered as one of the greatest and most influential Avatars to ever live, with her legacy being kept intact by the Kyoshi Warriors that serve and protect her adopted homeland, Kyoshi Island.

Kyoshi made a handful of substantial appearances in the original Avatar series and some minor ones in Korra, but not much was revealed about her backstory during these shows' respective runs. Instead, Kyoshi's life was explored more in-depth in both the 2019 novel The Rise of Kyoshi and its 2020 sequel The Shadow of Kyoshi.

The Rise of Kyoshi reveals Kyoshi's upbringing, growing up as an orphan after her criminal parents abandoned her. She was taken in by Airbender Kelsang, who was searching for the next Avatar with his old friend Jianzhu. After Kelsang and Jianzhu wrongly declare a man named Yun to be the next Avatar, the revelation that Kyoshi was the true successor led to a series of events that forced Kyoshi to flee Kelsang's protection and retreat into the criminal underworld with her future girlfriend Rangi, where she would swear vengeance on those who wronged her.

The Shadow of Kyoshi follows the character as a fully-fledged Avatar still struggling to gain the acceptance of the other nations after the events of the first book. The sequel goes further into how Kyoshi's blunt approach to solving problems alienated many of her allies. Two major conflicts arise in the book, the first being the ongoing conflict within the Fire Nation's elite. The second is the return of Yun and his interactions with a vengeful spirit.

An animated Kyoshi series based on these two novels would be a perfect fit for Avatar Studios' next series. Both novels feature the same balance of fantasy action and sociopolitical intrigue that made both Avatar and Korra so compelling for kids and adults, while also giving the spotlight to one of the most popular characters in the fandom.

When compared to both Aang and Korra, Kyoshi's backstory is the best of both worlds. She had an unusual Avatar upbringing and had to balance unconventional circumstances with mastering the elements like Aang, while her tough approach to being the Avatar mirrors that of Korra.

A Kyoshi series would also be a good launching point for future shows based on other past Avatars. With a timeline spanning thousands of years and several different Avatars still unknown, Kyoshi could pave the way for new stories that can further expand the franchises' lore and introduce fans to what could be their next Avatar obsession.
