After production was shut down due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Avatar sequels have resumed filming.

Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 resuming production was commemorated with an Instagram post from Avatar producer Jon Landau. The post featured a picture of the set for the sequels, giving fans a chance to see what kind of technology is used to bring these movies to life.

The caption for the post read, "Used my iPhone to snap a picture of our first shot back in production on the Avatar sequels."

Landau has used his Instagram in recent weeks to provide Avatar fans with updates on the stalled production, including a photo of himself and Avatar director James Cameron returning to New Zealand.

Filming on the Avatar sequels was suspended in New Zealand in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In May 2020, it was announced that New Zealand's government was allowing production to resume on various films and TV shows that were impacted by the health crisis.

Written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar 2 stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Edie Falco, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, and David Thewlis. The film arrives in theaters Dec. 17, 2021, to be followed by Avatar 3 in Dec. 2023, Avatar 4 in Dec. 2025, and Avatar 5 in Dec. 2027.
