Official Press Release
Avatar Press has carved a strong niche for itself as a publisher that pushes the boundaries between mainstream and independent with titles such as Warren Ellis's Strange Killings, Garth Ennis and John McCrea's Bigger Dicks, Steven Grant's Mortal Souls, and Alan Moore's Glory; company-owned characters such as Pandora and Webwitch; other high profile titles including Shi and The Coven; and the long-running anthology, Threshold. Located in Urbana, IL, Avatar has published over 300 comic books since 1997.
"From its inception on, Avatar Press has been a publisher with an uncanny ability to attract some of the comics industry's most in-demand talent, including Alan Moore, Garth Ennis, Billy Tucci, and many others," said Diamond Vice President of Purchasing Bill Schanes. "Combined with the publisher's roster of well-known characters, Avatar's titles are sure to appeal to a wide range of mainstream readers."
"This exciting new arrangement with Diamond gives Avatar access to the resources we need to help our company and the creators we work with continue to grow and reach new readers," said Avatar Press Editor in Chief William Christensen. "As the book trade has become more important to comics in recent times, I spent several months examining Avatar's options and Diamond delivers the best solution for us to reach that market. Combine that with their unmatched expertise in the comics specialty market, and it's clear that Diamond knows how to get comics into stores better than any other company."
"I took my projects to Avatar Press because they believed in them and believed in getting them to their audience," said writer Warren Ellis. "This deal simply reflects Avatar's commitment to getting their ever-more-diverse list into the hands of the people who want and need them, and in doing the job properly."
Diamond's Sales Team will immediately begin working with bookstores and book wholesalers to place Avatar products in stores across the country. "For years, Avatar has been winning fans over with a commitment to quality comics storytelling," Schanes added, "and we look forward to helping the publisher build on their presence in the comic specialty market, and expand that following into the mainstream."
