In Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, benders from the four nations utilize unique martial arts styles so as to draw from their element. In the process, the creators behind the two series actually drew from real-life martial arts and used them to inform just what those combat skills would look like. In this video, we're going to take you through the most powerful martial arts bending styles in The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, explaining just from what real-world inspiration they draw.

We're starting off our list with Baguazhang, which is a Chinese martial arts that is employed by Airbenders throughout the series. By drawing energy from their abdomens, Airbenders become nearly untouchable and allows them to evade various attacks. This fighting style is primarily defensive and forces the Airbender's opponent to hit nothing but air. In The Last Airbender, Aang uses this martial arts style on several different occasions. Overall, this one really fits with Airbender philosophy and their general approach to combat.
