Of all the characters on Avatar: The Last Airbender, Toph is one of the most interesting and engaging. While she doesn’t join Team Avatar until season two, she’s a huge part of the team, and she’s also a favorite of many fans of the series.

One of the things that makes Toph so great is that she’s not always the most likable character and she isn’t afraid to be herself. She’s an amazing earthbending master, and she has a great personality even though she’s not perfect. These are some of her top traits and her main weaknesses.

10 Worst: Aloof

Given how Toph was raised, it makes sense that the earthbender is somewhat distant around people. Toph wasn’t given the freedom to grow up around anyone her age, and she was kept sheltered in a way that was rather abusive.

Because of this, Toph definitely keeps her guard up around Team Avatar or anyone else, especially at first. While she does learn more to accept and trust people, she can be a bit more aloof than some of the other characters.

9 Best: Powerful

Most of the main characters on The Last Airbender are talented warriors and fighters especially given their ages, but there is something about Toph. As an earthbender, she exemplifies everything this element stands for including being steadfast and immovable.

Toph is an extremely skilled earth bender, and she ever invents metal bending. There’s no doubt that she has a ton of power, and she’s also powerful because of how she sticks up for herself.

8 Worst: Rude

While some of the other members of Team Avatar are more caring and emotional, Toph is more distant. This isn’t always a bad thing because someone doesn’t have to be overly outwardly affectionate to care about people, but sometimes Toph can be too rude.

Toph seems to enjoy making fun of people and laughing at them, and while this doesn’t mean she’s mean, she can be a little abrasive.

7 Best: Independent

Given how Toph grew up in such a strict environment, it makes sense that she would seek freedom in her life after leaving her parents. Toph’s overall personality is one that seeks independence and being able to roam. This doesn’t mean she doesn’t care about certain people, but she really doesn’t like being told what to do.

This independent streak is a really good thing for the most part. But, of course, sometimes Toph can take this too far especially when she resents Katara for trying to be responsible.

6 Worst: Blunt

Just like how Toph can sometimes be rude, she can also be extremely blunt. This is another trait that isn’t always bad, as being honest and open is a good thing; however, being too blunt and not having tact can be negative.

Toph usually says what’s on her mind without much of a filter, and this can lead to others, such as Aang, getting their feelings hurt.

5 Best: Rebellious

Toph (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

Being rebellious is something that many people might think is always a bad thing, but in Toph’s case, it’s actually good. Toph’s rebellious nature gave her the courage to go behind her parent’s back to fight in the Earth Rumble Tournaments, and she also had to defy her parents in order to join Aang.

This was the right thing to do both for Toph's own mental health and growth and also because Aang needed to help her save the world.

4 Worst: Reckless

While Toph’s independence and love of freedom makes a lot of sense and could be a very good thing, she can take things too far while being too reckless. The best example of this is when she gets way too into stealing money with Aang, using their bending to trick the street vendors.

While it might not have been bad to do this at first, Toph keeps doing so even after wanted posters about her go up. Toph sometimes needs to learn when to reign it in and be more careful.

3 Best: Resilient

All of the members of Team Avatar go through a lot of difficult things at a young age, and Toph puts up with a lot as her parents believe she is weak and incapable because she is blind.

Toph knows that this isn’t the case, and she never lets her parents convince her that she’s not skilled and powerful. Her resilience means that she never backs down from a fight.

2 Worst: Too stubborn

As with most traits, there are good and bad sides to every personality. Sometimes a character’s biggest strength can also be their weakness. The fact that Toph is resilient and determined is good, but she can take things too far by being overly stubborn.

Toph doesn’t like being told what to do, and she definitely thinks her way is the best. She also has a tendency to pull away from people when they upset her. Toph is not always the greatest person to be around.

1 Best: Strong

If there is one thing about Toph that explains who she is as a character, it is that she’s strong. This is overall one of the best words to describe her.

Whether it’s Toph's strength of character to finally break free of her parents and help Aang or her amazing bending skills, she is tough in many ways. Toph is very strong and able to withstand a lot of difficult things.
