Everyone loves Sokka in Avatar: The Last Airbender. He’s the goofy, comic relief character who is constantly getting himself into a world of trouble and always complaining about the state of things. But he’s also incredibly reliable and protective of his friends and family, desiring only to make sure everybody makes it home safely.

He learns so much on their journey as they try to find Aang the teachers he needs to learn the bending required of the Avatar. And his love stories are the most touching, and devastating, in the series. Here are ten pieces of fan art of everyone’s favorite big brother.

10 A Portrait

Sokka has a silly sense of humor and tries to be cheerful whenever he can, even though he often ends up grumpy because of the dumb circumstances the group continuously ends up in. Luigi Manese has painted a great portrait of Sokka here, looking like he’s on the verge of telling a truly silly joke to cheer up his friends.

9 Gone Fishing

Sokka and Katara are from a village on an ice floe in the far south of the world. They mostly subsist on fish that they go out to catch off the edges of the ice, which is how they find Aang trapped in the water in the first place. Tori has drawn Sokka here with his spear, which he uses to defend himself and Katara but more importantly to catch fish for himself and the villagers to eat.

8 With His Boomerang

Sokka is pretty much the oldest boy left in his village after all of the men go off to fight in the war against the Fire Nation, so he takes his responsibility as the protector of his tribe pretty seriously.

His father gives him a boomerang before he goes off to war to use in battle. Freddy has drawn Sokka with his beloved boomerang here; he’s clearly ready to go into battle with it.

7 Modern Clothes

It’s so hard to resist seeing favorite characters wearing modern-day outfits, and Sokka is definitely no different in that regard. He even seems more appropriate for it because of his modern undercut hairstyle. Alex Siple has run with the idea of what Sokka would look like in modern day clothes, giving him several outfits that he could potentially be seen in. All of the clothes definitely call back to the fact that he’s a member of the water tribe, with fish motifs or wave patterns and his iconic blue color scheme.

6 Water Tribe

Sokka isn’t the first one to start a fight, as a rule, but he always goes all in once he does. In this fan art piece by Fig, Sokka is touching his cheek and working his mouth as if he’s just been punched in the jaw. He definitely doesn’t look like he’s whining about it. Instead, he looks like he’s probably going to hit the person back.

5 Skater Boy

Viewers rarely see Sokka with his hair down in Avatar, but once they do, it’s pretty hard to forget. It definitely gives him a cool, skater look. Annie ran with this idea in their fan art piece, giving Sokka a skateboard and a too-cool-for-school facial expression, like he’s about to leave behind all the uncool haters and skate off into the sunset.

He does look pretty fashionable in his sweater with a collared shirt under it, making him look very sophisticated even as he looks like he’s about to hit the skate park.

4 Cactus Juice Stand

In the series, Sokka ends up drinking cactus juice in one episode since he is essentially dying of thirst in the desert. It causes him to hallucinate, and he spends a lot of time raving about how thirst-quenching the juice is. Kyu10 reminds viewers of this hilarious moment with this fan art piece. In it, Sokka is at a cactus juice stand, much like a lemonade stand, at which he is clearly raving about how great the cactus juice is and how much it will quench a drinker’s thirst.

3 Ready For Battle

Sokka isn’t always the bravest member of the team, but he always plays his part when it comes to battle. As the series goes on, he gets stronger and more comfortable with weapons, and he’s always quick to defend his friends. Alessia Trunfio has drawn Sokka here with a sword, a confident smile on his face as he appears ready to charge into battle against their enemies.

2 Sulking

Sokka does not have the best attitude of all of Aang’s friends. He complains a lot, and he often feels that everyone is making bad decisions or pursuing bad ideas. He really just wants everyone to get home safe and sound, with that being his major goal throughout the series. Sensible Nonsense has drawn him here clearly at the end of his rope and grumpy about the way things are going.

1 In Watercolor

Avatar takes place in a fictional land, but it definitely is inspired by Asian countries, with the characters drawn and in clothes reminiscent of various Asian cultures and the buildings and landscapes of the different nations drawing comparisons to different countries. Abby has drawn Sokka here with this intention in mind.
