The grandeur of Toph Beifong's bending is beyond most other characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender or its sequel — in fact, it would not be too much of a stretch to claim that she's one of the most powerful Earthbenders to be born in a long, long time. There's also the fact that her blindness has only ended up helping her "see with Earthbending," not to mention her last-second creation of Metalbending.

At first, Bolin comes off as a goofy, playful character without much of an investment in serious matters, but after his meeting with Korra, the young man promptly develops into a powerhouse. In addition to his phenomenal Pro-bending strategies, Bolin's latest trick, Lavabending, is nothing to scoff at. So who's stronger, Toph or Bolin?

10 TOPH: Speed & Ability To Sense Other People From A Distance

Toph and Korra

Toph is fast, like lightning-fast. She doesn't need her eyes; her feet are more than enough to sense vibrations from the ground, however slight, and however far they are from her location. She is the first person to notice that they were being stalked by "a metal man," consequently saving Team Avatar from being instantly obliterated by Combustion Man.

Further, she uses Earthbending to transport herself across great distances in rather short time periods, "skating" on enormous mounds of mud. Bolin's agility is a tad too unrefined to keep up.

9 BOLIN: New & Innovative Style Of Combat

Bolin defeats Tokuga

Here's where Toph's old-school style of Earthbending could face a roadblock, as the newly fashioned sport of Pro-bending provides Bolin with a far greater set of skills and techniques when it comes to battle.

Rather than depending on a limited series of stances, as diverse as they may be, this style incorporates a blend of different martial arts, fluid movements, and basic physical strength to enhance the act of bending itself. Besides, at her age, Toph isn't as durable as she used to be.

8 TOPH: Ancient Wisdom & Decades Of Experience

Speaking of age, here is where the Blind Bandit far outstrips her competitor: the department of ancient wisdom deriving from innumerable victories as well as failures.

The fact of Toph's octogenarianism is a major asset to her in battle, given her extremely wide range of perspectives, everything from her adventures with Team Avatar to being Police Chief to finally turning to nature for its spiritual knowledge. Bolin is fresh out of Earthbending school in comparison.

7 BOLIN: Potential As A Young Bender With A Whole Life Ahead Of Him

However, being a newbie, as it were, is likely to work in Bolin's favor, simply because he has several decades to grow, develop, and fine-tune his bending talents.

He has already picked up Lavabending, an incredibly destructive but equally versatile sub-discipline, so who's to say he won't learn Metalbending next? Sure, he couldn't do it the first few times he tried, but that doesn't mean he can't ever. Toph has reached the fullest extent of her greatness, but Bolin's upper limit is as yet unattained.

6 TOPH: Perception With Her Iconic Seimic Sense

Bolin is rather sharp when it comes to battle, but his sense of perception and judgment need some serious polishing, to say the least. For one thing, he hasn't exhibited any experience with the iconic Seismic Sense, a technique used to great effect by Toph and her daughters.

Most impressively, it is incorporated by Avatar Aang within his final elemental bending move against Phoenix King Ozai. Further, Toph proves that she has not gone rusty in the slightest while making Avatar Korra look like a total amateur.

5 BOLIN: Stamina & Youth

Stamina, or bodily reserves of energy, is a gift possessed only by youth — Toph, after Operation Beifong, grudgingly admits that she is past her prime, claiming that her physical prowess has been reduced enormously.

Bolin, on the other hand, is filled with considerably more vigor, and can probably last much longer than his opponent before getting tired. That being said, it's unlikely that a match between these two characters will take too long.

4 TOPH: Diverse Combat Styles With Complex Movements

Bolin will take a few years to truly become an Earthbending Master, while Toph reached this level by the time she was ten years old and winning underground tournaments left and right.

This is in large part due to her infinitely diverse combat formats, including a wide range of complex movements that she has created herself through practice. Toph is nothing less than an artist; her battles look like elaborately choreographed pieces than dusty rumbles like most benders of her ilk.

3 BOLIN: Quick Reflexes & Knack For Precision

TLOK Bolin Season 4

Toph was spry once upon a time, and she still hasn't lost much of her flexibility and reaction speed, as shown when she knocks Korra off her feet several times without even trying.

Still, Bolin's reflexes are a notch higher than hers, partially because of his professional Pro-Bender training, but mostly because he seems to have an innate knack for precision. Interestingly, he and Toph are the only two known people to have (temporarily) fazed a Combustionbender by aiming a stone at their foreheads.

2 TIE: Determination To Achieve Their Goals

Toph Bolin

This factor is present in both of these fantastic Earthbenders: Toph is driven by her ambition to become "the greatest there ever was", and, later, by her loyalty to Team Avatar and to her family.

Bolin is the same way, his goal is to win the Pro-Bending championships, to the point of finding new members after Mako and Korra quit the team. It's quite tricky to officially state which one of the two has a stronger resolve, to be perfectly honest.

1 WINNER: Toph

Toph Talks Down To Kuvira

Was this conclusion ever in any doubt? The man with the extremely dangerous Lavabending versus the woman who invented Metalbending can only end one way. Toph is vastly more adept at Earthbending, so much that one could argue that it's completely impossible for Bolin to stand a chance, let alone win.

She would toss him into the air with one of her rock punches, or seal his arms and legs together with metal gloves before he even realizes what has happened. Also, his fanboying over her is going to distract him more than a little.
