A tabletop role-playing game based on Nickelodeon’s hit shows, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, is currently under development at Magpie Games.

Magpie Games announced its new deal with ViacomCBS Consumer Products on its website. "The stories of Avatar are so moving for us because they are joyous and heartbreaking," said the CEO of Magpie Games, Mark Diaz Truman. "We’re incredibly excited to bring the tales of brave benders and loyal friendships to tabletop roleplaying games." Truman also stated that Magpie Games is committed to working with Asian designers, such as James Mendez Hodes, to ensure that the RPG is authentic and brings diverse storytelling to its players.

Pam Kaufman, ViacomCBS’ President of Global Consumer Products, showed similar excitement for the project in her statement. "We believe Magpie Games is the ideal partner to develop a roleplaying game based on Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra," she said. "Their commitment to supporting diverse content from diverse creators along with their exceptional game product made them the right choice to bring the world of Avatar to tabletop roleplaying games."

The RPG will allow players to craft characters in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender using templates. The statement provided just a few situations players might encounter when playing, such as "[protecting] local merchants from the Triple Threat Triad in Republic City" or "[traveling] through a spirit portal to rescue a child taken into the Spirit World."

The untitled Avatar game’s core book is expected to release in February 2022 and two supplements will be released afterward. The first supplement, titled Republic City, is scheduled to release in August 2022 and the second one, titled The Spirit World, is scheduled to release in February 2023.

Magpie Games is also currently developing a tabletop RPG based on the world of the popular board game Root: A Game of Woodland Might & Right. The RPG was successfully crowdfunded by fans of the board game for a total of over $600,000, crushing the campaign’s initial $10,000 goal. The RPG will have players take on the role of the woodland creatures from the original board game, acting as outcasts and vagabonds in the forests.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are both currently available to stream on Netflix.
