As one of the prominent characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katara plays a crucial role in shaping the destiny of the world when she decides to help the Avatar complete his first major task (ending Fire Nation hegemony). She leaves her beloved home for the mission, and later because of her work involving the political construction of the United Republic.

Katara spends her final years, not that they're anywhere near over, back home with the Southern Water Tribe. However, including the larger scope of the franchise, there are still several things about Katara that remain unknown. A few crucial questions regarding this incredible character are elaborated in the list given below.

10 What Did She Do During Her Childhood?

When she's born into the Southern Water Tribe, her people had already faced too many invasions from the Fire Nation (so as to remove and relocate any combat-worthy Waterbenders).

At the young age of 8, she loses her mother when Kya sacrifices her life to safeguard her daughter's. Katara is forced to step up and become the maternal force of her household, especially for her brother, Sokka. This can't possibly be everything, though, can it? Or did she genuinely spend all her time in domestic servitude?

9 How Did She Free Aang From the Ice?

When Sokka infuriates his sister (and not for the last time), she angrily and unconsciously Waterbends an iceberg into the ocean, thereby revealing a bubble of ice with an unknown figure glowing inside.

Instead of resorting to her bending, she takes Sokka's weapon and delivers exactly five strikes before the bubble is destroyed, and the Avatar is released after a century of absence. This was a protection mechanism created by the Avatar state, and all it takes to break open is a simple club?

8 Is She The Strongest Waterbender Of All Time?

Many people could lay claim to this title, well, in terms of humans at least. Ming-hua, Unalaq, and Hama, to name a few, could potentially give Katara a run for her money.

In all fairness, she only wins against Hama because the latter is distracted with Bloodbending Aang and Sokka. Then again, Katara is clearly a Waterbending powerhouse, using various techniques in the most inventive combinations to produce a devastating attack. She even manages to hold Master Pakku off for a short while. For now, the answer remains unclear.

7 Why Is She So Short-Tempered?

Avatar The Last Airbender Katara Bloodbending

A Waterbender follows the gentle philosophy of the Moon and the Ocean, in that the water remains even without the tides. This makes the style a metaphor for equilibrium or balance, as energy is gained from the pushing and pulling actions in Waterbending stances.

Katara is more like a Firebender in terms of temperament, however, blowing up for the simplest reasons, wanting to actually murder the man who killed her mother, or being cranky towards Zuko for way too long. Old Katara is the epitome of calmness, though.

6 Has She Ever Used Bloodbending For Good?

Katara vs. Hama

The notion of Bloodbending sickens Katara so much that she rallies against its use, effectively forbidding any kind of practice in the United Republic at least. However, just because it can be employed to control people, it doesn't mean that it's all negatives and no positive (Firebending has received a similar bad rap).

Bloodbending could be used in the field of healing, perhaps by improving circulation, removing arterial clots, transporting medicines in and toxins out, among others. Katara should have kept an open mind here, honestly.

5 Is She Capable Of Spiritbending?

Unalaq learns how to transfer his knowledge of Waterbending into a uniquely spiritual format by stuffing the liquid full of spirit energy.

Korra takes some time to figure Spiritbending out, but being the Avatar, she succeeds after a few failed attempts. Does this mean that Katara might have the same ability? Would she already know how it works, or would she require schooling in the subject? At her age, it's not like she really cares, anyway.

4 Does She Still Hang Out With (What's Left Of) The Gang?

Team Avatar vs Azula

Sokka and Aang have gone, but Toph, Zuko, and Katara still remain, albeit separated by thousands of miles of land and sea. Toph lives in the Foggy Swamp forest, Zuko has made his new base on Ember Island, while Katara moves back to the Southern Water Tribe.

In fact, Korra meets all three of them at different points in time, so it's possible that the others have a Team Avatar reunion every ten years or something?

3 How Does She Spend Most Of Her Time After The War?

While the comic series and animated sequel shed some light about Katara's work in post-war reconstruction — such as being an ambassador of peace and aiding in the creation of Republic City — what she does later has not been revealed.

There is a gap of around sixty years during which the only thing she is known for is having children and raising them. Katara, the homemaker? That doesn't really have that powerful ring to it or any of that explosive personality she has come to be associated with.

2 How Did She Deal With Aang's Death?

Katara and Aang married

Aang returns to the void in 153 AG, immediately after which he is reborn in the shape of Korra. Katara is obviously devastated by his death, prompting Kya to shift her life to the Southern Water Tribe in order to take care of her mother.

But there is only so much a daughter can do to ease the pain of such a loss, as there is no way she would be able to comprehend the ocean of emotion that connected Aang and Katara. Hopefully, she finds some closure before The Legend of Korra begins.

1 Will Aunt Wu's Prophecy Come True?

Katara with Aunt Wu

Aunt Wu offers a number of nonsensical prophesies to a gullible Katara, but the fact remains that she accurately predicted her ending up with Aang.

Similarly, does this imply that Wu's claim that she "will have [her] third great-grandchild before quietly passing away in [her] sleep" will also come true? If this is the case, then she has many decades of life remaining, because her grandchildren are all quite young, even though she's 89 years old.
